I just gave a little soapbox to my Software Design and Development students that I give every time I teach the class, and I’ll give it here on Mastodon.
Software development is an intensely social discipline.
1/
What you can’t be is misanthropic. When you write software, you are in relationship with other people. And if you don’t care about people, if you just •hate• people, if you can’t care about healthy relationships, if you cannot be bothered to communicate or to listen or to just give a ground-level shit about other people, DO NOT get into software. You’ll crash and burn — and you’ll cause terrible harm as you go down. Find some other discipline to go torment.
The rest of you…come on in.

Violencia sexual policial
@tferrer Al mismo tiempo, la policía aprovechó la oportunidad para atacar a las mujeres en la vigilia por la victima, y luego el gobierno aprovechó la oportunidad para reprimir las protestas en general.
So it's no wonder we have people going round chopping down Ulez cameras willy nilly. It may well be that the short-term and longer term impact on society and environment is unbalanced, but that's a policy discussion. All they're achieving now is costing me as a tax-payer, and conflating several loosely related measures.
But this is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you cause damage to law and justice.
Lead here is about people disobeying the law... as if the Tories haven't spent the last few years trying to make the law and justice irrelevant. They're quite happy to invoke "The Will Of The People" when it suits their ends, or to bend the interpretation of rules, even if it damages the rule of law and other critial civic institutions.

An envelope that contained a white powder was sent to Judge Arthur #Engoron who imposed a $454M judgment against #Trump, causing a brief #security scare Wed at a #NY courthouse.
…the business-sized envelope was addressed to Engoron but never reached him. The powder was quickly determined to be harmless in preliminary testing. Further testing is being done.

@Free_Press To quote Jack Nicholson as the Joker, "This town needs an enema."
@Free_Press Except... Mercedes is the name of his Communication director, who was in the audience. "The Independent" used to be a proper news organisation. Yeah Trump is defective and toxic in every way, but jumping on this isn't helpful.
@ryanhoulihan Because they stick to the rivers and the lakes that they're used to.
Pleased to see that one of my favourite #comic artists, @WinstonRowntree, is on fedi, although seems only to have dipped a toe. Beautifully crafted mini stories of angst, anomie and self-discovery.

@Daojoan Nice, do you have more cartoons like these?
So you want a quote for a thing, say a storage space, and the website is making you put in a phone number before they tell you how much the thing costs? Is the website validation preventing you from typing in a completely random number?
Worry not. Ireland has valid mobile and landline phone numbers reserved for use in TV and movies and absolutely nobody is validating for that.
Pick one from the range and be uncallable:

Hmm, this new #BBC sci-fi drama "Ministry of Time" sounds similar to the Spanish series "Ministerio del Tempo". Must be coincidence.

I'm not the first to note this remarkable similarity. (Spanish article) https://www.lavanguardia.com/series/20240223/9526794/the-ministry-of-time-bbc-plagia-el-ministerio-del-tiempo.html
Blimey, we all new Liz Truss was a bit unhinged but I never expected her to go full-on right-wing nutjob.

@ArenaCops She looked fierce and resolute on that stage, Putin should be scared. They have a well-organised media team, her daughter's also part of that. TBD if there is enough support or momentum to make Putin replaceable.
"Those who will mourn Navalny have fled abroad. They will sigh sadly from their permanent exile, secretly glad all the same that it was he and not them that paid the price.
Some may think about protesting or holding public vigils in major Russian cities. It is a dangerous idea, and so most mourners will dismiss it out of hand. They will go back to their families, huddle together, grateful that they can at least think freely, even if they no longer can freely say what they think. "
"But for the vast, tired, apathetic, silent majority, Navalny’s death will barely register. ‘Who? Navalny? He knew what he was getting himself into.’ He knew."
Above quotes from Sergey Radchenko's opinion piece in the Spectator:
@HannahHowe Heard a great podcast recently about the origins of Ode To Joy and the hope it represented, personally for Beethoven, but also Europe then and now. Rhapsody I'm afraid I associate too much with adverts for chocolate or New York or both.
Faves: Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus, Bach's Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring (Organ and Trumpet), Rachmaninoff Prelude in C sharp minor (the really sinister orchestral arrangement: https://youtu.be/kC3HqZDhq-g)
@MAKS23 For goodness sake. Navalny even got one of the KGB poisoners to accidentally confess.
