I can see the value in proprietary apps and platforms that make it easy for users. I can also see the value in a well-kept turnpike or toll bridge.
But.
There is even greater value in open source, non-proprietary networks and protocols, just there is greater value in the public highway being open to all.
But law and policy, like politics, is the art of the possible.
Rather than building another bridge or road, removing the toll-booths on the current ones may be a good approach.
Performance Promotion (img may be nsfw)
I wasn't expecting my first professional engagement after finishing work in a church to be "a whirlwind of burlesque, drag, stand-up and variety!" but here we are.
For #London and London-Adjacent folk:

Doors open at 7:30pm for an 8pm show - all done by 10:30pm. Tickets £10 from https://glitter-titter-cabaret.designmynight.com/
Let me know if you're coming!
PS if you'd like to get updates regularly about performance and music news, the best thing is to follow me on band camp.

UK Hacker Friends!
I'm trying to quickly throw together a list of "Northern" Hacker/Cyber events/meets, past and present.
What have I missed???
... and no, this isn't for the book, that's indefinitely shelved.

Context of previous toot for those not aware: #NAFO is a sort of counter meme movement that's been supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion, as well as fundraising for vehicles and equipment. Several politicians, including the amazing @kajakallas have supported the "fellas" with avatars of themselves. In that video, Kallas' avatar pops up towards the end.
Greetings to #NAFOfellas at the first-ever #NAFOSummit in Vilnius.
#NAFO is a living example of how to disarm Russian disinformation with humour, intelligence and enthusiasm. Behind every Fella is a real person who believes in #Ukraine’s victory.
Thank you for your service.
Platformism is the same as conservativism: "in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

> If there is one piece of wisdom I gleaned from this experiment, it’s that human intelligence is fundamentally interdisciplinary. Language bleeds into sight, which tangles with memory or personality and so on. Artificial intelligence programs don’t really work that way. It may be able to do one thing really well – maybe even a few things. But once you push it past its assigned skill, it’s blobs all the way down.

Since 2008 English government has issued £850b in bonds, which the BoE has printed "money" to buy.
This is partly why we have inflation.
The other reasons are: Political risk (four unelected prime ministers and a pantomime instead of good governance). And investors fear the BoE will restart the printing presses.

5/ "The power that tormented people had evaporated as a phenomenon ... When they took over the [army] headquarters and the offices of the Interior Ministry, the FSB and the administration, there was a sense that the guys had come to overthrow the regime. And this caused a powerful and massive outburst of enthusiasm. The Wagnerites left solemnly, but people were still partying all night long. They did not let go." Reports afterwards stated that police were booed when they reappeared in the city.

Keeping my space toots at @astrodad as an experiment in self-moderation :)
