@fkamiah17 @jkfanghanel I have many friends and colleagues who are involved in various aspects of the different sciences; I can't think that any of them will be less than horrified by the implications of this poster, published by the party that governs the UK.
The Conservatives have to be removed from office.

Good grief. In the light of #LaurenceFox's comments on #GBNews, #Sky #News decided to do a piece on the #GenderPayGap. They had a man and woman on to argue about it.
It came out, live on air, that he was being paid and she wasn't. Sky apologised and offered her £75, the standard fee for such an appearance. Then they offered to increase it to £200, the same as they'd paid him.

Today is William Ramsay's birthday, UCL Chemistry's Patron Saint and Mascot. Ramsay isolated or discovered the noble gases at a time when there was no room for them in the periodic table. He also developed methods for handling gases that were crucial to Rutherford's and Soddy's discoveries about radioactivity. You can learn more about his work on the usual sites, but here's a #ClassicKit article describing his invention of vacuum grease. https://www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/ramsay-and-travers-grease/4017737.article
So in news that definitely did not surprise me at all, the remote app for my current instant pot just got removed from the app store.
I know blind people love instant Pot, but listen. They're a shitty company that makes shitty smart products that are obsolete within 5 years maximum. Look at this e-mail:
> To enhance your user experience, we will be retiring the outdated Remote Control for Smart Wifi app by September 30. We want to ensure that you have the most seamless and enjoyable experience when using our products. We understand that change can sometimes be challenging, but we have exciting news! As a token of our gratitude for your loyalty, we're thrilled to offer you an exclusive opportunity. Enjoy $100 OFF on our brand-new Instant Pot® Pro™ Plus 6-quart Smart Multi-Cooker.
Translation: Your old thing is obsolete, so here's a discount on our new thing that will probably also be obsolete soon.
I don't care how convenient it is, we've been burned twice--the most recent being a slow burn as the app in question has barely functioned for the last two years. The company does not respond to accessibility requests. How much more evidence do you need?
The non-smart Instant Pot is almost usable without an app if you do some memorization. If you're going to get a pot, just get one of those instead.
Thanks to the wonders of Apple, you will not be able to install this app on any future devices. When I replace my phone--which I will likely do within the next couple of months--that app will be gone, and so will my equal access to a fairly expensive instant Pot.
I'm not going to buy another one. Ever.
Sunak ‘backs drivers’ with curbs on 20mph limits and bus lanes - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/29/rishi-sunak-plan-for-motorists-would-limit-travel-choices-campaigners-say shows stupid #sunak is a retrogressive, callous monster. children will die as a direct result of his restrictions on 20mph limits
To speakers of underrepresented languages: If your language isn't available in Mastodon's posting window and you'd like me to add it, please let me know.
I will need:
1. Locale code https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes 2-letter ISO 639-1 codes are preferred, and if not available, we can use a 639-3 code instead
2. English name
3. Native name
If your language is small, try not to be too granular re. dialect so that you will get more posts when filtering.
Boosts welcome.
'The next commander of #Wagner would have to not only be able to control the actual manpower, they would also need to take over #Prigozhin ’s dealings with the Defence Ministry and the #Kremlin there are speculations that only someone from the Defence Ministry would be able to take control of Wagner. However, the #Wagnerites are not happy with that idea'

If you watched #BBCBreakfast yesterday and fancied a dabble into #organ #music there are loads of recitals round the country, often free or just a donation welcome. They usually provide a leaflet about the pieces, the composer and the organist, as well as a history of the building and the organ.
As @annalapwood said, this is an instrument that plays throughout the entire building. I think of it as an air-powered synthesiser.
It's one thing to hear via speakers or headphones, but it's something else when the huge 32ft pipes of somewhere like Temple Church (shown here) rattle you to the core.

Recently received first place in ArchDaily's Refurbishment in Architecture awards, with its striking design transforming a formerly derelict industrial building into an iconic landmark in South Africa’s oldest working harbor.

New album from Anna Lapwood just dropped. Loads of dreamy #Organ tunes, including this lovely rendition of Debussy's Clair de Lune showcasing how the instrument is so versatile and capable of power and softness. https://spotify.link/AhAIbkSYtDb

Some f**ked up logic behind this destruction of a gorgeous building that is similar in swathe (but much more interesting) to the new Google sidescraper going up at Kings Cross. If the building is a "reminder of car dominated urban planning of the past" well what's that to do with the building?
Why not change the road itself from that bleak internal motorway? https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/sep/28/birmingham-council-votes-to-demolish-brutalist-landmark-ringway-centre
Just another worried little citizen of this modern-day Pompeii. Techie at UCL, working on Process Automation with MS Power Platform. Scatterbrain, interested in education, languages, Space and lots of disparate things. sorry.
Keeping my space toots at @astrodad as an experiment in self-moderation :)
