Ah, I think I can imagine. Local chicos treat the visiting ladies well, I imagine?
Algarve is one region there I haven't visited much, the coast and beaches are gorgeous but it's turning into a brit ghetto, and I prefer the normal, Portuguese villages and people, culture.
Fascinating country, so many things to see and variety, on a small sland area. I love it there.

Yes, I had heard and then read about it. Apparently, a retired person could get up to 10 years residence there without paying Portuguese income taxes on their world wide income.
IF you can get your original country, where the income flow is originating even after you left, that you are now a Non-Resident, you could get a good break.
Canada REvenue agency has its own rules to determine when a canadian citizen (my case) is accepted as non-resident. Until they accept that, they can slap you with a "assumed resident" tax. You probably could get credit for that when filing in Portugal, though.
Changing country is not a simple thing, specially when you have assets, income and need to consider health care too.
But it's possible, and like you said, Europeans are taking advantage of it. It's a wonderful place to live, and lower costs than their home countries.
