France bans MS Office 365 and Google Docs in schools, India unbans @videolan, #Google settles a $400M privacy violation, @fedora 37 is released, and a lot more: this is your #linux and #opensource news video:
("Detect text from picture" doesn't seem to work from the #Mastodon web app on Android. I tried it and waited for a minute before canceling it—was I just impatient?)
I see quite a lot of #Science posts expressing concern if The Public will follow their #TwitterMigration over on here.
Here's the thing: they don't even have to. Every #Mastodon account has an #RSS feed. For example, here's mine:
https://mstdn.social/@rysiek.rss
Every hashtag has an RSS feed as well (as seen from a given instance), for example:
https://mstdn.social/tags/Science.rss
Your audiences can follow you without ever setting up an account on fedi, with any RSS reader.
A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people.
I’m sure North American, Australasian, vehicles are similar.
Sound efficient?

Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via #StreetsblogUSA, read their article. #bikelanes #bikes #cities #transportation #mobility #sharrows #infrastructure #urbanplanning

They say “We can’t do that. We’re not #Amsterdam.” You respond “Amsterdam wasn’t always like that either,” showing before & after transformations illustrating that the cities we admire made CHOICES. And they’re still making choices TODAY. They make more tired excuses. You don’t accept them either. I keep seeing lots of long-time #fediverse users saying 'don't favourite posts it does nothing' but actually when you favourite my posts it makes me smile and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
marriage, immigration
I won't post much at this time, as I'm preoccupied by the return of my American partner.
He's back in (Cape) town (heh) and we're tying up loose threads—sorting his belongings, emptying his apartment, etc. At the same time, we're grappling with the prospect of marriage, green cards, immigration …
I won't romanticize it. It's all draining, consuming stuff. Even the marriage, which would normally be a cause for merriment, has taken on a different cast in the light of his leaving.
A little disappointed that we're using #AcademicMastodon. #AcademicFedi or #AcademicToots when #Macademia was RIGHT THERE.
mastodon meta
On the one hand, Mastodon triggers 580+ HTTP requests every time I post anything (because my followers are distributed across 580+ servers)
But any time I visit a single web page in my browser it can trigger 30-100+ HTTP requests. So posting to Mastodon may end up equivalent to visiting 5 web pages?
Jury is still out for me on if the way Mastodon works is a significant problem in this respect
Security researcher David Schütz has won a $70,000 bug bounty after stumbling across what appears to have been an elementary way to unlock any Google Pixel phone without knowing the passcode.

It appears that the official #MastodonApp simply doesn't have the download functionality programmed yet. There's an option to download an image but it doesn't actually do anything.
I don't like how barebones the #MastodonApp is, don't like the clunkiness of #Tusky. Now trying #Yuito.
Where does the #MastodonApp store downloaded images by default? I saved an image and I can't find it on my phone.
