Going down a rabbit hole to find the perfect rotary encoder for a control surface, and the number of options is staggering:) I'm looking for 4 high quality knobs, and so far, the EM14C0D-E24-L064S seems to be the best candidate as it's the cheapest optical 64 steps with a button. Though it's weird: the bourns website says EM14 have detents, but the datasheet says otherwise...

Suggestions are more than welcome, what's your favorite knob?!

@tristanC Interesting.. My parts catalog only lists knobs with detents that have 32 or less steps...

And I'm fiddling with my nanokontrol knobs with 127 steps in less than a turn and find the resolution abysmal (for camera control).

I don't know about your case, but I think I will be going all in on resolution and normalize the range myself.

@dpwiz ha your right, I now see detents only for 32 or less steps. Well I never used encoders without clicks, and I am wondering if it would feel the same as regular pots.

My use-case is for sending MIDI/OSC message, so I will normalize the value myself too, e.g. for variable accuracy based on the rotation speed.
