Seeing some posts talking about fediblocking turning Mastodon into a "filter bubble." No. We absolutely do not need abusive or fascist views to have a high level of intellectual diversity. Full stop. That hate can fester somewhere else.
After 20 years of social media, the experiment has been run. Hateful people are unconvinced by rational argument, so there's no point engaging with them.
This is a rotten, disingenuous, meritless argument, from A to Z.
Fascism is to be defeated, not debated.
Lovely illustrated, interactive #GoogleDoodle today celebrating American geologist and oceanographic cartographer Marie Tharp.

Ok.. so this morning I'm going to blow your mind with some more incredible Iron Age technology & craftspersonship!!
Ribbon torcs - once thought to all the Bronze Age, but it's now recognised there's two groups - Bronze Age simple twisted forms & these mega clever anticlastic-raised Iron Age forms.
Brian Clarke (goldsmith extraordinaire) made one & if you watch the video in this link, you'll see how - honestly, it's amazing!
Tektonika DOA #journal covers a wide range of topics and scales, from plate tectonics to deformation processes in fault zones, and from the duration of an earthquake to the construction of orogens over several tens of Myrs. #openscience free #openaccess.

Ever wondered where the numbered ENSO indices come from?
Rasmussen & Carpenter (1982) numbered ship tracks going across the Pacific and these were adopted for the sub-regions that they crossed.

Given that we are rapidly trying to build community here…
Can I ask you to do two key things:
1) Reshare other people’s posts - so your timeline is rich with other people’s posts for anyone browsing your content to discover.
2) Follow, follow, follow. That goes for following those posting good stuff - and also following those that follow you (as much as practically possible/sensible).
If you do these things, you’ll help us all network up at fast pace - and we all grow our voices & reach. ✌️
Monday sea ice update time - have a great week! 🙂
#Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 9th lowest on record (JAXA data)...
• about 130,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 550,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 1,170,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,670,000 km² below the 1980s mean

At least 46 dead after this earthquake. This is far worse than I thought it would be. Earthquakes do not have to be big to kill people.

Learned a new thing this morning.

Today's #earthquake in W Java has a strike-slip mechanism according to moment tensor solution by BMKG, Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency - https://inatews.bmkg.go.id/
See map 👇🏼 with the "beach ball" showing the fault mechanism with two possible very steep fault planes.
Hypocenter shallow depth ~11km and closeness to Cianjur town (less than 10km), where damages are reported, likely explains its destructive character. Strong shaking also reported in Jakarta at ~80km from the epicenter.
I'm a #Mamademic! I'm #Mum to mini-volcanologist (5 years old) and mini-geophysicist (2 years old). Having #kids and doing #science requires some juggling!
Today, I'm #WFH because mini-geophysicist is sick. I had a really busy day planned and this has sent me into a bit of a minor panic. I'm still learning how to juggle and be comfortable at prioritising their needs over work. The snuggles are cute but it makes working on the laptop hard.
Hello everyone!

Our #introduction - (1/2)
The International Seismological Centre (ISC) was set up in 1964 with the assistance of UNESCO as a successor to the International Seismological Summary to follow up the pioneering work of Prof. John Milne and Sir Harold Jeffreys in collecting, archiving and processing of #seismic bulletins and preparing and distributing the definitive summary of world seismicity, the ISC Bulletin.
Today's Google Doodle is about Marie Tharp, a pioneering #oceanographer. Click the animation to learn about her - the video and activities are great!

Magnitude 5.6 #earthquake on #Java #Indonesia about one hour ago (2022-11-2ZT06:21) a little south of #Jakarta. There are reports of damage. Signal on station GE.BBJI (Bungbulang, Garut, Java) courtesy of @geofon and displayed using @obspy software. I hope that damage and injuries are limited. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000ir9t/executive
