The CDC has instructed its scientists to retract or pause the publication of any research manuscript being considered by any medical or scientific journal.

The move aims to ensure that no “forbidden terms” appear in the work. Banned terms must be scrubbed.

You'll have seen various reports of the range of universities cutting academic staff due to the ongoing financial crisis in higher education... but, of course, its less often the managerial cadres that are being cut-back.

So it might be time to remind university managers of this abiding truth:

while its possible to imagine a university without a marketing [or other professional serves dept. you choose] its a lot more difficult to imagine a university without academic staff!

The other day I was arguing with a colleague, & I said that I thought 95% of the funds getting thrown at AI would be better spent strengthening infrastructure to handle climate change. He said “AI will fix climate change.”

Now I think 100% of those funds should be redirected.
