I think we lost a lot when the world moved away from diskless workstations, and indeed, X Terminals.

Diskless machines are stateless: no local code to manage. So caching a remote image locally, that can be updated for a whole fleet as the admin wishes, should be easy on Linux, and very flexible with today's software tools.

@lproven today's tools? It was easy 30 years ago, using tools and hardware available back then. Heck, it worked over unswitched cheapernet.

We've lost so much to mindless doubleclickers using wsus.

There was an amazing Swiss Linux-based tool called REMBO once. IBM bought it and it sank without a trace.
