Some papers are necessarily difficult because they deal with difficult topics, but others are unnecessarily difficult. I wonder sometimes if top journals couldn't do a better job of pushing authors towards plainer language.

I was delighted to discover that this classic 1990 piece on clear scientific writing was reposted as a blog in 2018. I have referred to my dog eared pdf version many times. It demonstrates and explains practical hints for diagnosing and fixing obfuscation.
