65534 characters? WTF
@dean Yes what about it?
@freemo doesn't this count as overwhelming someone's feed? you reposted it about an hour or so ago and it filled like 2 pages of my federated timeline
@dean@uwu.social I apologize. I didnt consider people with lower resolution screens. on mine its less than half the vertical height of my feed.
You probably also use vanilla mastadon which as i recall has really tiny columns. Keep in mind on most displays (like GNU Social, as well as my own mastodon instance) we have wide columns. So on my display (and the ones I considered when posting it) it didnt take up very much of my feed.
I agree and apologize I didnt consider vanilla mastodon UI in that regard, I can see how it would be excessive from that perspective. In the future I'll try to use the CW on even remotely long posts.
@freemo all good, was just pointing it out so you knew
also keep in mind mobile clients like tusky which also work for your instance (your users could be affected if they use vanilla masto web or a mobile app)
@dean Very good point, I hadnt considered that. But our instance is highly modified. So I sometimes forget about some of the more "limited" UIs in terms of column width and height. I'll try to be more aware in the future.
@foxxmg Most people rarely use the limit. If you do we ask you use a content warning not to overwhelm peoples feed. Act responsibly and use your best discretion. If not an admin will usually talk to you about it.
So far most people keep their messages short except for the occasional longer too. But rarely near the max. The feed stays pretty sane.
