How mastodon feels to me

@saxnot Why do you want your instance to block that instance when you have the power to do it yourself? I'd be fine with instances being unable to block other instances and simply rely on the users to block instances if they wish.

@wowaname @saxnot The issue is that "reasonable" is not a universal and objectively understood measure. Its different to everyone else to the point of being a useless word in this context.

And yea as we said there is nothing wrong with individuals blocking or ignoring you, or even if those individuals wish to use global block lists among themselves. The issue is that the leader of an instance can block on behalf of its users even if its users object. Since you cant migrate your followers you are "locked in" to the tyranny of your instances moderators.

The only way to truly achieve the objective is either remove instance level moderation (not really the best move IMO) or simply fix the migration feature so you can migrate all your followers AND your posts if you don't like your instances moderation rules.

@wowaname Even then your "word" is usually filled with statements open to interpretation. For example "No hate speech" is a common rule. Problem is people may not agree on what is hate speech. For any moderation process it will ultimately just boil down to the exercise of the opinion of whoever has the power to execute on it.

@wowaname I agree with those points. But what if an instance is a harbor for people who constantly harass others? they can create new accounts just to circumvent bans. Whose responsibility is that to take care of, the local instance or the remote?

@wowaname I prefer a bit of restructuring. Eliminate the need/ability for server-wide instance blocks. Instead replace it with block lists. Users can opt-out or in at their leisure. Sort of like being able to turn a spam filter on or off, i can still get my spam, I just usually font need to.. Hell create a "moderated" flag that is hidden unless you reveal it as a user maybe? Lots of better solutions than leaving one person in control of who gets blocked for many other people.

@wowaname I can think of a few, but they are far and few between for me.

@wowaname Like i said I have no issue with private federations, just make sure you let users pick up their stuff and take it elsewhere if the admin doesnt welcome them anymore, or otherwise acts in a way the users don't tolerate.
