That's probably the one way that Diaspora is better is its character count.

But that says nothing for its community.

@LWFlouisa I run a mastodon instance. My instance has a 65,535 character count.

It is so easy to change the character count that it is really a non-point IMO. Though it should be made easier (through a configuration option).

@freemo I'm anarcho-communist, and often find my views descriminated against, but then when I remove their comments, often they're complain of the same censorship that do to me.

Follow

@LWFlouisa While I would strongly disagree with you on your view of anarcho-communist I would never discriminate against you for it. As long as you engage in respectful discourse i would even encourage you to share your views in the conversations i have.

@freemo Likewise. I'm not really radical ancom or ancap.

@freemo I am wondeering, if I can ever afford to host my own, would it even make sense to host a novel length word count instance? I'm not sure what 60,000 character translates to words.

@freemo Mainly I noticed a poem that is 702 character is to much for some instances. And this is a poem, not a 3,000,000 word novel.

@LWFlouisa Really depends what you want to do with it. Hosting my instance is expensive but because of a few specific reasons 1) it is open to the public and we have over 100,000 posts cumulatively. 2) we have a follow bot with over 8K follows 3) I have customized source code running on my server (for example the increased word count)

This means i need a dedicated host instance with a lot of hard drive space. 1 & 2 require hard drive space #3 means i need a dedicated instance.

So for a basic instance its only $5 a month. That will have a 500 character limit and you cant follow more than a few hundred people probably. If you want an instance like mine your talking $30 a month.

@LWFlouisa @freemo You could try Pleroma. It's lighter than Mastodon and a small one can be run on a 1€ per month vps.
And Pleroma comes with a 5,000 character limit, but you can easily change that.

@artik Thanks. How exensive is it to self-host? I'm liking vampire-estate.

@LWFlouisa For me it's 2.5€ a month, and this vps is completely overkill for my single-user instance.
Then there's also my super cheap domain I found for 1.89$ a year.
@LWFlouisa What do you mean?
You can also use ddns (dynamic dns) and get a free domain. I used https://freemyip.com for a while.

@artik When I do my regular blog, I actually use localtunnel.

@artik Does freemyip also handle website hosting? Such as static blogs.

I was considering an IPFS instance, though I'm not sure if that's possible: each time its updated the hash value changes.

@LWFlouisa Haven't heard of localtunnel, looks nice.
With freemyip you can choose your domain (I was using artik.freemyip.com).

It's just a ddns, and you need access to the server where your website is being hosted in order to use it.

You could use Tor, there's a guide I wrote for it on the Pleroma wiki. But you won't be able to federate with most instances, since they don't use it.

@artik By the way, what anime is your avatar from? It's nice.

@LWFlouisa It's from the manga Parasyte (kiseijuu). It also has an anime adaptation though.
I really like the mangaka's art style even though it looks relatively simple at first.

@artik Yea I still need to finish that, I love me some seinin manga. Big influence actually.

@LWFlouisa I have plenty of recommendations if you ever need some

@artik It's something, I only ever saw a female execution (beheading) a couple of times in manga. I'm surprised even Seinin enforces this weird "never show female death" policy.

Luckily Elfen Lied and a few others make up for it in spades.

And I am specifically talking about execution, not just murder, which is frequent.

@LWFlouisa I've never noticed that tbh, but I remember there's a manga about a family of executioners from France (The Sanson family) called "Innocent". Might have more of that.

I've only read a previous work of the mangaka, " Kokou no Hito", about a rock climber. His art is extremely detailed and the landscapes he draws are beautiful.

Why the interest in that?

@artik Manga probably has less of a problem with the. More of a hollywood thing thankfully.

Well the issue went back to when I first say Legend Of Galgameth.

@artik Xena solved the problem somewhat, but only sort of.

Then I saw a clip from Lady And The Highwayman, after that there was no going back.

One of my novels is kind of me poking fun at myself about it.

@artik I wish for every Lady And The Highwayman, there was an Elfen Lied or Beserk.

@artik Ah I think I heard of this one, that one is good.

@artik Is it true that Shounen Jump is basically the D.C. comics of Japan? To be honest, I never thought about it that way. I seems like when anime was was censored, it was mainly under 4Kids control. (A very American company.)

Turn split coconut into hotdog four kids, not four chan.

@artik Lets just say censorship wasn't Elfen Lied's issue, that's probably one of the few times I'd say the first scene was a little overkill.

GOT has the same issue.

@artik Lots of beheading. Maybe a little to much.

What I like is one major impactful one. But as it is, at least in the US it fluctuates between Game Of Thrones and Mary Poppins.

@artik I guess I'm avoiding saying it directly, as I'm used to the self-censorship environment of the bird site.
