It seems like the Fediverse has some very awesome people. Most of the conservatives are reasonable, havent seen any of the extremist conservatives I tend to see more often on facebook.

However while there are may wonderful neo-liberals on here (left leaning) it seems like all the worst, most vile and toxic examples of neo-liberals have chosen the fediverse as their home. Its like gab for the left.

I think there are enough quality people to make it ok, most of the extremists will block me the first time I try to have an adult conversation with them anyway so the problem solves itself quickly. It just makes me wonder what has made the fediverse so attractive to them in the first place.

My ideal social network would have rational scholars ready to debate differences of an opinion every chance they get. With extremists (particularly politically speaking) no where to be found. A boy can dream...

@msh Yea I'm over there. Also the instance im on qoto.org is a scholar-oriented instance as well. Lots of good people here and good services. So at least locally its not a problem.

@freemo I think the promotion of Mastodon as "a Twitter alternative" made it attractive to people who'd often see their hateful content get flamed/reported on Twitter, so they try their luck here.

It's happened to Voat, where over time toxic subreddit communities move over to thrive with much smaller likelihood of being reprimanded by the administration.

@btcprox True, but why liberals specifically. Conservatives feel that way too, and they went for gab not ActivityPub. I'm not sure that theory explains that part,

@freemo who knows? Maybe certain political beliefs correlate with the online info sources the people consume, which may determine which alternative platforms they may be aware of first 🤷‍♂️

@btcprox I think it probably just has more to do with if the initial seed population of each group was inviting to one or the other. After that the momentum of either group growing carried out the result.
