So there appears to be a HUGE influx of new mastodon users. Any idea where this is coming from? Was it media.

@freemo They come from Twitter. They changed their API and removed important features which make third-party apps useless. The Hashtag breakingmytwitter is very popular for that topic.

@zoeferal Usually twitter seemed to ban righties as much or more in my experience. Has that changed in recent months maybe?

I left twitter because I saw a few righties banned, im a free speech advocate so while i despise most on the right this was a no go for me.

@some_qualia @zoeferal I;m not a righty or a lefty. I find both extremes to be hard to deal with personally.

@freemo @zoeferal Ah. Well, as an actual communist, Iโ€™ve gotten death threats from white nationalists and gotten account locks for telling them to go to hell. So. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

@some_qualia @zoeferal Not surprising. I've had the same experience from people both on the right and the left. Most americans are extremist and intolerant on either end of the spectrum. Though there can be exceptions on both sides too.

@freemo Twitter banned a bunch of communist accounts and weโ€™re a pretty large and tight knit community of shitposters. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

@freemo The Alex Jones purge may have spooked a lot of people into abandoning the old social media platforms.

@freemo But I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot more libertarian-right-themed instances popping up in the near future.

Assuming they don't all just migrate to Minds, Gab and BitChute.

@4of92000 you mean libertarian / right? I tend to agree (just dont see libertarian and right as all that related).

@freemo Well, there's the libertarian right and the libertarian left, and honestly I'd consider Jones what happens when someone from the libertarian right dunks his head in acid (being the psychedelic substance) for four hours.

But no, I'm talking more the Minds/Gab/BitChute crowd who hate censorship and DESPISE the far left in general and "SJW"-ism in particular (which to be fair I don't really have a soft spot for either, considering myself liberal-conservative).

@freemo Basically, the libertarian right is when you take me and keep going.

@freemo Well, there were API changes on Twitter that are affecting a lot of third party clients. I think much of it must be due to that (I know it is my case).

@freemo a bunch of leftwing twitter folks got banned for nonsense, so they came here with other left twitter users in protest/solidarity.

@freemo twitter decided that, instead of banning Nazis, they should ban everyone who stood up to Nazis

@Chinchillazilla Must be new tactic. They always seemed to ban people on both sides in the past :(

@freemo saw it mentioned last night on birdsite ... came and took a looksee.

@me_neeley How you liking it so far? I run my own server (similar in nature to scholar.social), came here a little bit ago though.

@freemo honestly? still feeling a bit noob ... but I'm down for the concept. Social media has become people screaming at one another and cat pics. Of the two, I'll keep the cat pics. ๐Ÿฑ I miss the exchange of ideas and respect.

@me_neeley While i still find there are a good deal of people that will throw a temper tantrum the second you disagree with them, there is more fruitful conversation here than on other mediums. So its a pretty good place I'd say.

Its easy to learn so dont worry to much about being a noob.

@freemo True - all things being equal I guess there's no ensuring respect and civility at all times but I like the size, lack of monetization through ads, and humans moderating the crazy. This is only day 1 - so check back with me in a week or two and I should be old hat. ;)

@me_neeley You can usually pick an instance with a moderation style you like. Thats the nice part. Some instances (like mine) dont moderate much at all, others will moderate at the drop of a hat, and everything in between.

@freemo I'm good with people talking - what I'm not so much interested in is porn, spam, racism, misogyny... you know, the usual. oh, and screaming in all caps. I mean, there's a time and place for all caps.. like winning the lottery, Picard coming back, and double rainbows.. ๐ŸŒˆ

@me_neeley There are many instances that will moderate on those points. Some are very heavy handed and may overstep their bounds, some not so much. I know some instances that have banned people just for being republican because they claim it is automatic racism, I've seen some instances ban for being on the left with similar logic.

All about picking the instance that has the right balance for you. My instance only moderates if a personal ban isnt sufficient. Luckily we dont have any racists or anything like that yet so it hasnt been an issue.

@freemo picking an instance is like standing in the cereal aisle at the grocery store. There are so many that look good, but sooner or later you have to commit to at least one box. Being an adjunct and a hospice social worker looked like a good fit for me - at least professionally. (But I will admit snagging a username over in tenforward.social .... I'm such a geek) ๐Ÿค“

@freemo Itโ€™s the continuing Twitter squeeze on 3rd party clients and their own tightly-controlled client that makes me wonder if Iโ€™ll stay there and if I can find what I want here (frankly, Iโ€™m skeptical about the latter... its the QWERTY effect).

@pwgallagher what is it your looking for? That may provide a clue as to if you will find what you want here. I've been here a while so i may be able to give you some idea as to what to expect.

@freemo Thanks, thatโ€™s very friendly. Hard to say precisely. My Twitter stream is a fire-hose of people I follow (mostly but not exclusively public policy wonks) none of whom is on Mastodon (according to the Mstdn โ€œbridgeโ€ facility). So Iโ€™m going to give this a little while; try a few instances. See what turns up. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

@pwgallagher The system is federated. So you wont get much of a difference between instances in terms of who you can connect with. Its all one massive network.

The difference between instances boils down to moderation policy. the owners of an instance can choose to block people and instances from their instance, and thus no one on that instance can connect with that content. So picking an instance mostly comes down to picking one that suits your desired style of moderation.

This instance is free speech which means we only block people or instances in extreme cases.

@freemo Understood! The local/ federation network is interesting. So far, I like the the Web interface to Mstdn, too. The facilities for conversation and browsing are both pretty neat and Qoto seems like a fast node. So stuff to like already.

@pwgallagher did you check out halcyon.qoto.org or video.qoto.org yet? The first is a front end that replicates twitter you can use with mastodon here. The other is QOTOs peertube instance. Peertube is federated using the same standard as mastodon but more like youtube. So you can follow an account on peertube and get the videos posted by that account right in your mastodon feed.

@freemo Thatโ€™s interesting. Unfortunately @pwgallagher cannot log-in to halcyon.qoto.org (โ€œinstance does not existโ€). WIll try again later.

@pwgallagher you need to do it like this: @ pwgallagher @ qoto.org without the spaces

@pwgallagher If you want to connect with some people quickly you may want to try an introductory post with in it. Right now the network is extremely active so youll probably start getting connections quickly.

@freemo I saw a tweet about it and thought I'd check it out. Though it took me a while to realise they weren't talking about the band.

@freemo How many users are there? And how am I seeing your posts/toots? Not that I'm complaining. Lol

@FeckinLife In the whole network (federated timeline)? Millions registered.

You're seeing my toots cause all new users automatically follow me since im one of the admin of QOTO
