But twitter dealt with the problem of fake news/skewed news, but it had the resources.

Considering you are seeing a massive influx from India, this is gonna be a major issue. Fake news is in season all year round and it is a massive problem because there are just so many news items even fact checkers find their hands full at times.
You don’t want news channels spinning up stories on how Mastodon is a hub for fake news.
As it is it was in the news for an Isis instance and another fork of mastadon that was hijacked by an american far-right group.

I think this is worth discussing but we would have to be careful. To do it right there needs to be some oracle that can identify fake news without having any political leaning left or right, that can be tricky to do.
The best process I know of to weed out "fake news" would be the Peer Review process engaged in in scientific journals, but that is a very resource intensive process.
Then there is the fact that because QOTO is STEM oriented it means most of our users are science minded and logically critical. We rarely get the types that post fake news, when we do no one follows them or talks to them and they usually just wind up idling their account and disappearing. So for now it has been a bit of a non-issue.
