By the looks of it this spike in new users we are seeing is the biggest one we have seen this year since the wave of users from India joined us. It's around 200 new users per day right now.
Welcome to all the new users! Don't forget to make an #introduction so I can share it.
@stevenroose yea I've noticed that as well. I think the big reason is all the earlier data for about 2 years prior to this graph isnt shown and wasn't recorded. So the change on the visible part of the graph is much smaller.
@freemo Well it's still a 3x user growth without much volume growth.
@stevenroose The growth rate in posts was about the same, 3x.. We started at 300 toots per day and for the current month are at almost 900 toots today, same 3x growth, though i agree it doesnt correlate smoothly, it most zigzags slowly up and down.but it is going up.
@freemo Hmm, when you hit 4k users, you were already at 800 posts per day. Anyhow. It's strange. It means that Mastodon has a hard time keeping users active. Plotting daily/weekly active users might also be an interesting metric. Though that's harder to extract from a database after the fact.
@stevenroose Well no at 4K we **peaked** at 800, if you compare peaks rather than rolling average than our current peak is a little over 1000, so still growth.. A peak of 300 at the start of the graph and then a peak at 1000 now, still considerable growth in toots. The problem is like i said it dips up and down a lot, hard to say if we will keep the current totos or if it dips back down again.
Its to be expected with surgeses of new users we will see huge increases, then it will die down a little and then slowly trend upward again.. which is pretty much what we see.
@stevenroose Also from november onward the number of lurkers increases substantially because that was the date we got on join mastodon. so a lot of signups were lurker accounts, prior to that data accounts were almost all active it seemed.
@freemo Very strange how the number of toots per day is so uncorrelated to the number of users. As if the first 100 users are making all the posts and all the rest is just lurking.
