Casu Marzu is a type of intentionally rotten cheese eaten in certain regions of italy.
I'm not sure if I'd have the stomach to try it but I guarantee you if i ever do the maggots are going to be removed first...
Because the larvae in the cheese can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in) when disturbed, diners hold their hands above the sandwich to prevent the maggots from leaping. Some who eat the cheese prefer not to ingest the maggots. Those who do not wish to eat them place the cheese in a sealed paper bag. The maggots, starved for oxygen, writhe and jump in the bag, creating a "pitter-patter" sound. When the sounds subside, the maggots are dead and the cheese can be eaten.
@moonman Yea its illegal, but apparently you can still get it. I've seen and heard of lots of families eating it.
I think I'd gag if it had the maggots in it, but if your remove the maggots I can and would do it. Like you said, just one of those things you have to do for the expiernce... But no maggots please!
@moonman I have some of this stuff sitting in the firdge though that just arrived today. Not nearly as bad but worth a try!
