yup thats the main aim of stingray... pinpointing peoples location wont be accurate to be useful enough when we talk about cellphones.

At best it will tell authorities you were in a general vicinity. that can help sometimes in a criminal investigation if there is other evidence to suggest you might have done something wrong. But not particularly helpful otherwise. In fact the antenna data from existing cell phone towers is probably good enough for that already.

@freemo @11235 @moonman @realcaseyrollins In a case like this, being in the area and not living there is enough to authorize them to do a deeper dive.

Also, in some urban areas, the telco cells can be pretty compact areas. Maybe they can't say "you were standing next to that car when it caught fire", but they don't usually need that.

@lnxw37a2

deeper dive into what? What scenario are you envisioning where this would specifically compromise you.

there are certainly scenarios where, as I said, just only need to know your on the block at all. But its hard to know what sort of scenario your envisioning here.

If your just a protester who is either peaceful or at least non-violent no cop is going to care you showed up to the protest.

If your talking about a fugitive ont he run or something maybe I could see a point here.

@freemo @lnxw37a2 @realcaseyrollins @11235 > If your just a protester who is either peaceful or at least non-violent no cop is going to care you showed up to the protest.

lol okay

@moonman

Im not saying cops are good guys.. point is if you think their going to all that trouble to see your out of town so they can pick whos ass to beat and whos not to, your an idiot..

Trust me they will beat your ass indiscriminately if you so much as look at them sideways, and they dont give a flying fuck about your cell phone or where your from when they do.

@realcaseyrollins @11235@liberdon.com @lnxw37a2

@realcaseyrollins

none of it makes sense though.. you have 200 rioters on a block. You coordinate with the CIA and hijack their cell phones and look up the identity of them all, then detmine 20 happen to be from out of town. You still have no easy way to sort out one from the other. So you employ man power to look up each one individually maybe try to get a picture of them. Yet their all wearing face masks so you still cant tell who are these specific 20 people.. all for what? to what end. It isnt illegal to be out of town. They arent going to target you for that when they can just target the people with hammers breaking windows.

none of it makes sense

@moonman @11235@liberdon.com @lnxw37a2

@moonman

Why would they kettle based on if your out of town or not considering the extreme effor that takes rather than based on violent behavior or other behaviors.

@realcaseyrollins @11235@liberdon.com @lnxw37a2

@freemo @realcaseyrollins @11235 @lnxw37a2 they can kettle a hundred people at a time and pursue leads at their leisure later. I'm not sure if we may be talking past each other. maybe we don't disagree.
Follow

@moonman

Here is what they wioll do, they will identify the leader of a protest and prosecute them, on that I agree.. but no one is getting in trouble simply for being out of town, thats is too much of a waste in effort. They will identify one or two people specificlly thought to lead the group, totally different scenario.

@realcaseyrollins @11235@liberdon.com @lnxw37a2

@freemo @moonman @realcaseyrollins @11235 Stop thinking prosecution. Most of their response will happen outside the court system, over months or years of targeted harassment.

@lnxw37a2

So you think they will just identify you, not arrest you and then harass you in future years and future ways?

@realcaseyrollins @11235@liberdon.com @moonman

@lnxw37a2

Ok I follow... I admit it is something cops will do, though im not sure they are employing it on that scale. But I'm open to the possiblity.

Do you happen to have any evidence of a case where they found a police database containing mass information of tens of thousands of people present at a protest.. in other words, any evidence of mass tracking of non-arrested protestors based on cell phone data over multiple years? or is it more speculation?

@realcaseyrollins @11235@liberdon.com @moonman

@lnxw37a2

Fair.. well lets hope if they are employing such methods that at some point it becomes exposed to the public.
