So I just crunched the numbers on this post. Presuming that the protests caused the bump I pointed out in cases and deaths, and presuming the large peak at the right was provoked by some other cause, then the george floyd protests were directly responsible for killing 56,982 people, and were responsible for infecting 6,087,567 people. This is minimum, since the numbers were on the decline before the protests, and declined after the protests as well, this suggests the real numbers might even be as high as double that.

While I certainly support the idea that the George Floyd killing was wrong, and we need police reform. I can not justify the the protests or the consequences we are still suffering from it. Certainly not the death of 57,000 people!

Just wanted to share a little chart showing the likely effect of the mass BLM protests over George floyd compared to the COVID-19 recorded new case...

@freemo @Science Yeah, i'm totally with you that the Trump administration should get punished for those 57,000 and many more deaths. Because of irresponsible dealing with the pandemic and because of not doing enough against police brutality.

@peas

Well yes and no. If trump had done more for the pandemic it wouldnt have effected the loss of those 57,000 lives sadly. There is no way during a viral pandemic that that many people can pack shoulder to shoulder in the streets and not have massive loss of life, no matter trump did or didnt do.

As for him not doing enough about police brutality, on that point we do agree, him not addressing police brutality adequately
certainly aassured the problem continued.. though, by that logic I could just as easily blame Obama who likewise left the problem unaddressed, or bush, or clinton, or any other president. Sure we need better leaders, but that is really far removed from the direct cause IMO.

We can point fingers at countless causes that are all justified points who hold blame on injustices... But millions of people, knowing a deadly viral epidemic was waging where even small gatherings could cost thousands dead, make the choice to defy the safety of countless people. Literally any other time, and over the death of any of the countless colored men who are killed all the time, would have been appropriate. Not now, this wasnt the time and the people who protested knew that, they were told this for months on end prior.
