Everyone please be aware that the service we used to use that provided tickers went down and doesnt plan to go back up.. This unfortunately slows down the default theme.

As such I switched the default theme to the no-ticket theme and this works just fine. However im not sure it will help for people already signed up on the server.

To fix the problem please go intto your preferences and change the theme to the no-ticket theme.

@freemo Does that mean "any theme without 'ticker'" or rather "a theme with an explicit 'no-ticker'" in it? Because i heavily rely on a dark theme to not burn out my eyes...

@admitsWrongIfProven yea any theme without a ticker should work.. I dont recall which have tickers and which dont off hand but i am pretty sure the dark theme doesnt have one.

@freemo Oh, the themes offered in the browser are quite clear on "i have a ticker", if that is what is meant: the list features "Mastodon instance ticker-x [...]" entries en masse, and then there are several that don't have "ticker" in their name and the "quoto no ticker" theme, which confused me.

@freemo I seem to be set to the qoto-no-ticket theme already so maybe changing the default did help people who were already signed up. What are tickets?

@radehi wonderful... tickers were a styling element that showed what server a post was from, sadly is its gone now.

@beatrice @freemo agreed running much faster. Joined yesterday and wasn’t sure what the speed would be like.

@freemo thanks for the heads-up!

As I only recently joined I assumed that was normal performance for the browser portal and mostly stuck to the app.

On inspection it seems the ticker theme causes repeated requests to miy.pw/ which times out with 503: Service Unavailable. This is indeed avoided by switching to a theme without a ticker as you say, such as `qoto-no-ticker`.

Hope other folks pick up on this and switch themes for themselves. In fact, I wonder, is it possible to remove the themes that do this to avoid the problem?
