blocked by mastodon.art, NOT blocked by the People's Republic of China

translunar.academy is apparently not blocked by the chinese firewall, i know it's probably because it's not a huge website but it's so funny to me 💀
@sorrowl their admin blocks practically everyone. they probably block us because she hates the instance I used to be an admin of (disqordia.space), and hates everyone who ever interacted with that instance's creator even one time (for example her current crusade against Calc and all of firefish)

@winter@social.translunar.academy Yeah, I heard something about their feud with Calc, but didn't know they were this aggressive in blocking.

@7666

While im pretty sure mastadon.art is one of the heaviest blocking instances, this isnt very accurate.

The tool is grossly inaccurate simply because if an instance is blocked and then later unblocked, the list doesnt remove it. So the numbers are usually significantly inflated.

You can get an idea though of the real numbers by looking at the timestamps and seeing the last time the block was observed.

@sorrowl @winter

@freemo @sorrowl @winter bud, the VAST majority of those blocks are valid as of today. Like, 97%. That's not "grossly inaccurate". 3% error's pretty decent.

also keep in mind a block is still a block even if it got rolled back by the tyrant's mercy at a later date (paid off? groveled?

@7666

Sorry I mean the tool is grossly inaccurate in general. It is not surprising that in MA's case they rarely if ever remove a block once added.

@sorrowl @winter

@freemo @sorrowl @winter i believe it was a deliberate design decision to leave historical blocks in place so someone couldn't weasel their way out of saying "we never blocked you!!!"

inaccurate is still not the word i'd use, i think you just want something on top of the API that filters out all non-current blocks which i think would be useful actually

@7666

I think its perfectly fine to leave a record of historical blocks. The issue is that it isnt updated when the count is displayed.

@sorrowl @winter

@7666 @sorrowl @freemo @winter they blocked my old domain because I interacted with the usual suspects. Changed the domain because .dev is prettier and somehow they haven’t blocked the new one lol

@feinzer @sorrowl @freemo @winter buddy you just CC'ed a former disqordia admin in this thread it's fucking over
@7666 @feinzer @sorrowl @freemo you're all on borrowed time now that you've talked to me once :FunamiYui:
@winter @sorrowl @7666 @freemo I can't count the number of times I've interacted with a mastodon.art user... Mostly because I've never done it.

Blocking that much means even if I'm not specifically blocked by them, their federation reach still sucks LMAO. I've even seen previous users that switch instances and instantly get federated everywhere.

So yeah, at the time I got mad because I'm a single user instance dude, like, I just wanted interaction. But now I don't really care, my feed has been federating enough to keep me entertained
@feinzer @sorrowl @7666 @freemo @winter i used to follow a couple artists there until recently

that said, in typing this reply it occurs to me i've literally followed more artists on tumblr in the past month than i have on .art the whole time i've had this account (and it's not impossible that i've followed more artists on tumblr in the past 2 months than on .art ever)

@apophis @sorrowl @7666 @freemo @winter yeah. And many switch instances anyway because .art is basically drama discussions 24/7

Not a day after putting Kainoa (firefish dev) on blast because he boosted a post from eris. Not even a day after that, the admin was having beef with fucking stux from mstdn.social. I think it’s impossible to be on .art and avoid just having drama shoved to your face lol

@feinzer

The toxicity of an instance is directly proportional to their block count.

@sorrowl @7666 @apophis @winter

@meadow @feinzer @sorrowl @7666 @freemo @winter didn't the last wave of drama start because a .art user was banned for posting about using that program?
@apophis @sorrowl @7666 @freemo @meadow @winter yeah no, that was even before the firefish dev situation. It's literally daily I'm telling you lmao
@apophis @7666 @freemo @meadow @sorrowl @winter I haven't heard more after the stux post. I don't really care but Eris was mad as hell with .art and posting about it daily so that's my source :cirno_laughing:
@apophis @feinzer @sorrowl @7666 @freemo @winter i heard whispers of about that but didnt know the details. it sounds unbelievably absurd. the fediblock crowd really parodies itself huh
@meadow @apophis @7666 @feinzer @freemo @sorrowl @winter yeah, she banned a .art user who mainly spoke Spanish and barely any english for talking about using GIMP "because it's an ableist slur" and this poor guy didn't even know about it being a slur because it's an English word and wasn't given a chance to explain himself or anything

re: bdsm terminology

@meadow @apophis @7666 @feinzer @freemo @sorrowl @winter i guess the definition above that would be what the slur is related to

re: bdsm terminology

@alienskyler @7666 @apophis @feinzer @freemo @sorrowl @winter yes i wasnt trying to disprove that, just showing that the bdsm definition does in fact exist

re: bdsm terminology

@meadow @7666 @apophis @feinzer @freemo @sorrowl @winter yeah
now i'm imagining an alternate universe where someone still gets banned for using the GIMP art program but it's because of the kink thing instead of because of the slur

re: bdsm terminology

@alienskyler @feinzer @sorrowl @apophis @freemo @meadow @winter this universe may exist in the adobe licensing department

re: bdsm terminology

@meadow @feinzer @sorrowl @apophis @freemo @alienskyler @winter i think the important part here is that it's contextual. if someone is talking about LaTeX typesetting and they get banned because latex as a material happens to be used for kinky catsuits, it would be just as dumb.
@meadow @7666 @apophis @feinzer @freemo @sorrowl @winter i only recently learned about the kink thing but yeah i guess it was some kind of slur for physical disability but i think it's outdated and i have never heard it used except in a reclaimed context
@alienskyler @7666 @apophis @feinzer @freemo @sorrowl @winter oh yeah i remember that now. i'll prolly forget again though cuz i never hear that word used in the ableist slur context
@meadow @7666 @apophis @feinzer @freemo @sorrowl @winter yeah that's fair

i just think it's ridiculous and also patronizing to assume any marginalized group can't tell the difference between an acronym and someone using a slur

@alienskyler @feinzer @sorrowl @7666 @apophis @freemo @meadow @winter The software is named after the character in Pulp Fiction, so it sort of has to do with the clothing sense of the word, and as far as I know, and nothing whatsoever to do with the slur for disabled people. They're etymologically completely different.

It reminds me of the kerfuffle about the word "whitelist". (There's a slightly different thing going on there, granted, but still.)

@meadow @sorrowl @7666 @apophis @freemo @alienskyler @winter I didn't know neither the kink nor the slur. I learnt about it when some people forked gimp into glimpse lol
That instance just keeps getting worse
That's abhorrent admin behaviour
@usernameswift @feinzer @sorrowl @7666 @apophis @freemo @meadow @winter yeah, it's really abusive, but there's like a whole cult of people loyal to her it seems, who call anyone who doesn't agree that this is the only way to create "safe, diverse spaces" a nazi

@alienskyler @feinzer @sorrowl @7666 @apophis @freemo @meadow @winter

I mean they even tried going after me on this one web comic instance. Even though I hadn't even plugged my web comic at that point.

Apparently even abiding by community guidelines isn't enough.

@LWFlouisa

Places like that, the toxicity is so overwhelming the rules are just for show... someone being upset is its own crime regardless of any facts.

@alienskyler @feinzer @sorrowl @7666 @apophis @meadow @winter

@freemo

It's just weird I've started missing diaspora now, For those who used it is pretty different from Mastodon.

If I ever get the skills, I'm strongly considering GNU social or diaspora instance myself.

@LWFlouisa I never really used it other than viewing some stuff from other people from time to time.

@alienskyler @feinzer @sorrowl @7666 @apophis @freemo @meadow @winter "chance to explain himself"?

People want a little echo chamber where everyone does performative lament, they don't want to deal with explanations.

Much better reputational boost to be seen as smacking down the fascists ASAP.

Let them have their thing.

@winter @feinzer @7666 @apophis @freemo @sorrowl wut.

Will she like hunt me down to murder me for like using Inkscape or something? (For the record I don’t use Inkscape fuckfuckfuck I don’t want the prolly apartheid aftermath beneficiary desirer coming after me fuckfuckfuck :ToshinoKyoko: )
@7666 @sorrowl @freemo they never unblock, so while that's true about the tool's accuracy I do trust it when it comes to dot art.
