Donald Trump has many faults but Harris is wrong-- it is better to negotiate with enemies than to support endless wars. #Debate2024

@rchusid Absolutely. This is one of the few areas Trump was correct.

@freemo @rchusid no. Putin is not trustworthy. He wasn’t in 2016, he isn’t in 2024.

@holgerpatzelt @rchusid

Whwn did i or anyone say he is trustworthy. You dont talk to your enemiea out of a sense of trust...

@freemo @rchusid negotiations only make sense, if you can at least minimally trust into the other sides words of the agreement. Otherwise negotiations make no sense. It makes no sense to negotiate your garage to your neighbor for stopping him shooting your pets if you can’t trust him stopping shooting your pets, kids or yourself.

@holgerpatzelt @rchusid

I disagree. A violayed treaty gives you justificatikn and a right to retaliation you wouldntnotherwise have.

Moreover tresties and negotiations arent thenonly advantages, simply being able to have a temporary ceasefire with nonpromises from either side is also a win.

Witbout.communicaton the other side cant even negotiate a surrender. Trust has little to do with why we talk.

@freemo @rchusid what more treaties do you need? The UN treaties for the borders, the treaties after the world came down and Ukraine gave the sowiet nuclear weapons to Russia, the treaties of 2016 after Russia took Crimea by force? Be sure about a fact:
Putin is using these as toilet paper and will do so with whatever you negotiate with him. He will not stop.

@freemo @rchusid Yeah, I hope Ukraine can win completely, but US giving them just enough weapons to keep fighting but in inadequate quantities or with too many restrictions to actually win seems like the worst possible thing we could be doing.

Also Trump was right on in saying Europe should deal with this; they easily could if they had the resolve. Follow Poland's lead.

@ech Eurppe is no more responsoble forr ukraine than we are. I donagree thouvh we have to either support them fully or be neutral. Half commiting to one side of a war is wasteful and immoral. It only drags things out.

@freemo yeah, think of how much blood is on our hands because of this.

re. Europe: I'm not saying Europe is *responsible*; that isn't my point; I'm just noting there's more at stake for them than for the US.

@ech I dunno alaska is pretty close to russia. Anything that has russia gaining power will be bad for us. Its not.like resoirces from the west of russia cant easily get to the east.

@freemo yeah but like come on they aren't going to invade Alaska.

@ech They arent? I mean fear of ruasia invading alaska is tbe whole reason we took alaska over. They ha e shown already they will happily invade anywhere thry think they can win.

@freemo I don't know, I think Russia was more the one entering that deal out of fear of invasion (from Britain), but I suggest the geopolitical realities are maybe a bit different these days.
