VIDEO FILESIZE BLOAT / FILESIZE SICKNESS... EXAMPLE...

@trom

YOUR VIDEO FILESIZES... DUDE YOU'RE KILLING ME AND NETWORKS

1.4TB ...for... 1 talk... 1080P ?
800MB ... 720p version
+ no lower resolutions copies?

Even copies at lower res means total copy of 1 talk = 1.4TB + 800MB + [500mb + 200MB etc

Those that don't notice and change res settings get your 1.4TB cake size

Even for the best of talks I would say that is TOO MUCH!

- measurably a lot of eco-damage
[ ups /down / traffic to read / write / move around etc ]

---------------------------
There is audio version here for those that want to avoid the video:

videos.trom.tf/download/stream

But audio version isn't a replacement for the damage

---------------------------
MUCH LESS - Why?... Reason$
---------------------------
- I don't have bandwidth / internet speed, seriously - many share connections - consider them a bit

- 1.4TB / 800mb to save and the watch later is terrible
- you're not the only download I have, so can you imagine you're also occupying on my hard disk/disc / if not the network ?

- encourages MA$$IVE disk usage + cost (if you use all-you-you-can eat American backends you might not notice but some of us don't have that)

- less follows - if you want me / my profile of user to watch save more than 2 video's you're occupying space for subsequent downloads (should I buy another hard disk just for your channel and leave on during the night to download like dial-up? lol). Even if I did the 800mb option I would have to do one by one AND delete it.

- remote transfer = disposable / invisible damage.

Unless you're using cheap American back end$ + ULTRA-FAST net you might not even notice what you're doing... TIME TO DBL-CHECK THAT

I wouldn't even use this kind of space even if it was free.

For this podcast style collection - I can't see the logic.

------------------------------
SUGGESTION / MEASURABLE CHANGE
------------------------------

- Keep copy of big files locally
- If really needed, all access on request by users (see how many requests you get I bet just 1!). 1080p streaming seriously... what do you want me to do with that?...

...other than wasting traffic / energy / time for backing up?

- Add 480p version online so it's the healthy default for people - nobody is going to miss much more than that!

- Audit!! You need to audit and see the balance / points here / which side you're n politically even (time usage also!)

- Reminds me of non-technical camera people when they put default pictures sizes of 12MP for every picture and wonder why they can't email even 1 picture to anyone or why loading a picture pauses every time... so as example / side-related topic I think it's really similar
(5MP MAX for average pic is still very good and occasional switches to 12MP double-digit filesizes = clever usage of tech).

------------------------------------------
RESULT OF SLIMMER
------------------------------------------
- People can do more online and flatmates don't have worry and complain to each other and wonder why their internet is not working.
- Can save for future replay

------------------------------------------
ANGRY / POLITICAL SIDE
------------------------------------------
This is the kind of nice-to-do bourgeois stuff that just goes 5 steps backwards (ignores humbler usage) IN OVER-KILL while just having a 'nice' chat with nice people (I'm sure) about war...
so this Western kind of killing energy at the same time is for me personally a no-brainer. We're wasteful in such basic / even the technically able. Fast / lazy?

It's a bit harsh but kids (including me) are so politically aligned they can see and data-wise this is more conscious, but how we probably grew into this so new normal is such a higher ratio... r scales up so much more damage (unless you think your vid will solve things in 1 go and not need ongoing more videos).

Ignoring the Gb's and Tb's per film is nothing for new generations.

I know I've used amateur camera people and teenage style downloads as example but I stand by them also (don't forget the logic before that as the main).

Anger I think from those pushing out the dialup type people also like me (compared to your city connection)
and as a side-note (I know it's distractionary ) actually technically these speeds / upgrades etc are slowly pushing basic users as another kind of 2nd class citizen... <---woa

And maybe because you're technical able but technically ignorant for your own creations or 'just in case one day I'll need this all-you-can-eat cake'. [INSERT CAKE ICON HERE YOURSELF]

The disrespect or lack of humbleness (LACK of calculation per upload) is such an abuse of y/our privilege

You do the download / upload math and assess

1 download 1TB as download or stream... and then optionally multiply that by whatever else you have on your discs - that will do to prove it to yourself)

If you're still using American backends / backups that is also added fuel on to fire but for now keep it just to the first parts of this message. And try change it as a checklist.

And finally for those watching - ask yourself if any kind of revolution is going to not going to need the above or prefer lighter weights on it's shoulder and more mobility.

Picture that the revolution is ideally not going to be DISK FULL messages, slow streams of the intelligent talks and more self-maintainable storage balance.

Perhaps the ''revolution'' is just not to do this kind of stuff and take it back to a more kinder level of ecology / physics which nature and people do not feel so burdened by default.

@freeschool Your text is 1.5TB in size I think. Calm down a bit. It is not 1.4TB are you insane? The 1080p file is 1.4GB. That's totally different and totally normal for a full HD video of 2 hours long. We do not have 480p resolutions for our video hosting because we lack money for more disk storage. If the thousands of videos that are hosted there will be converted in yet another resolution we would need a lot more disksapce. Feel free to donate to TROM so we can enable that.

Revolution = Reducing/ MINImise your online footprint & fileSIZES....

@trom

Imagine a dumbass responding to you asking you to donate money for adding the 480p video version of video when they could easily NOT put the 1080 1.4TB version and have free space for their other videos... 1.4TB for 1 video! I guess you don't get that sentence.
The rest is purely for my own reference like blogging talking to myself. Thanks but no thanks for you 1080p MASSIVE video... of people talking... you definitely are changing the world.

So I am calm! lol... Technical-constructive-anger more than anything like rage with a bit of tongue in cheek - but you don't get it *shrug* or should I dig in a bit? Determination let's say using logic is what is happening here which maybe you don't share.
So it's just a feeling that logic is there... which you don't really reply on... <---Ah well this is the main avoidance of humanity.

My conclusion in detachment:
(you don't need read if you don't get 1st paragraph)

- For you it's normal to have bloat / HD video
(obviously for this highly detailed 'cinematic' action-packed film you can justify HD 1080p cost to life- NOT really looking at the technical aspect(S) <---- oh well)

- You're not genius enough to think about recording at half the res / finding a way? Can't you config it for half size, 3/4 size? (imagine I'm negotiating on behalf of the earth here!)

- I think you don't really see the point in having smaller files in general or seem willing to entertain doing different
(again your short message just to say you relpied -----> v. little technical parts -----> v.little discussion ---> err, just very little!)

- I think you're conscious up to a point.

So overall doesn't sound like you are willing to assess damage in your normal setup or look at your own real local revolution (your filesizes).

----------------------------------
Moving on... I tried to download just the audio version...
----------------------------------

Quality @ 192kb/s Audio ?
- for what?
Again the unneeded HD quality.

I think it takes people like me to get through or give up. (Consider it both done here)
Much like it telling people about using banks or that there is this damage happening by doing things a certain online, setting each picture on your camera to 12MP, but people of course don't listen, they just expect the speed and cloud to take their picture and video load, not the brain (you have it in other things but this seems totally off your radar)

So that's how I see you as the same even if you make podcasts about similar things... know a lot... advocate doing things in a proper way or free - still so lax about certain basic things.

It doesn't occur they can just turn it down with a setting and save the future.
People maybe in 5 years will be making posts and podcast telling everyone how they can 'save' diskpace and 'save' money, processing time, upload / download... win wars simply but doing everyday things in less bloat.

SUMMARY

So anyway, I cared, I said aloud. Chances are there for you (don't even do it for me) it's for you regardless of my delivery style or perception of it).

Some of the stuff you might say to others, imagine they just keep doing the same - you have logic somewhere.

MORE ABOUT THE AUDIO

Audio alone = 162mb at 192kb/s

Half this really sounds the same (almost CD quality) [ 96kb/s ]
I just reduced it to 64kb (half CD audio quality / MP3 soundtrack)
60mb just for audio and still same sounding since it's basic talk.

I make good points but I think you at not there in considering it too deeply. Instead you mention paying so you can enable more filesize bloat instead of recording half that quality and doing away with that silly comeback in reply.

Anyway that's the mentality I refer to when I say and another kind of or let's say 'opportunity' for you to change. Everyone has their blind spots.

I see more tech than sense in this.

Similar to more money than sense.

But hey you're not perfect and it's ongoing.
I guess everyone needs time
(and MORE American disk space, hence the problems in the first place).

Lots of types of wars and you're part of it.

:nes_fire: <-- every second data is online it's burning up energy
The hardware to keep it spinning from those cheap suppliers is an ongoing war on earth and people, and frankly bad relationship you could reduce / minimise.

No need reply to this. Take it logically.

@freeschool My friend you are a mess. It is GB not TB. Calm down. I will ignore and block your account.

@trom

*** CORRECTION ****

Gb's not Tb's
so 1.4Gb's for 1 Trom video

not 1.4Tb's... perhaps that's what made it seem crazy - yes sorry for that.
So 1400 megabytes for 1 video + copies + stream packet ups/down...
