I recently upgraded my own workstation to a ThinkPad T440p with osboot. I sell it pre-flashed on my store at https://minifree.org/ but used an X200T myself.
The T440p keyboard has grown on me. The keys feel heavy and robust, nice tactile feel. I love this new machine!
@libreleah Laptop Problem / for repair:
After a hot day and switching off sooner and sooner, it didn't boot (same model as this T440p). Any ideas? I think I gave it too much to do so when I power on now it only lights up the LAN light on the right which gives me a bit of hope the motherboard is not dead.
Ideal welcome
@freeschool Send it back and I'll take a look at it.
"Hot day" probably doesn't mean anything in this context, but hot "and humid* could be problematic.
High humidity could potentially cause liquid corrosion on your mainboard. I will confirm this by opening the machine.
If you're a customer of mine already, and this is a laptop you bought: I will send you a full replacement if you wish, *before* you send back the old one, this is so you can copy data or swap the SSD beforehand if you wish.
@libreleah
Appreciate it -- not a customer
so advice is well received.
I wrote the problem story in more detail below - think it will give more clues like a mystery of a death....
Was doing some video converting and DVD compression AT THE SAME TIME
(I know on a laptop stupid AND it was hot that day... and maybe I thought could get away with it as it was invincible somewhat... )
and the laptop or video/screen went off after a few hours (I went outside for gardening and came back maybe a few hours to see video off). Lost track of exact time but probably 2/3+ hours
It seemed running but the screen was off and system unresponsive to keys / no reaction or loading of anything loading know things blind / not making make hard disk loading noise
After this I left it on for like an hour while working outside again hoping it would come back again
(this could have made things worse) >_<
So I hard-powered off (I couldn't even shut down blind) and then after letting it cool powered it on again and it worked!... but after 30mins or so the same thing with video blank with nothing responsive (couldn't hear harddisk or anything change with keys pressed)
Same thing as rebooting it after a bit but this time 10mins (less time) it lasted and video/screen went off... then on trying to boot again (about the 3rd or 4th time) it wouldn't boot at all.
RESULT / END STATE
Now no longer switches on (no bios / no fan spin or it spins for a second not sure, but either way nothing after)
*** BUT **** I DID NOTICE that plugging in the power supply shows the light next to usb's (on right side) lights up momentarily (like it always did) right next to the LAN port
yeah I'll try the ram (I though it might beep if it was the case but a good test anyway)
@freeschool yeah sorry, i'm really not sure what might be your problem
these machines are designed to abruptly switch off long before they get into dangerous temperatures. if it's not booting up, it's either just bad ram or... board failure (something shorting on the board usually)
could be dead screen. try an external monitor
i can have a look at it if you want. i have a send-in service on minifree and it doubles as a repair service. i'd be happy to give it a go
@freeschool 9 times out of 10 it's the ram. or the screen (backlight failure). like, 9 out of 10 times. rule those out first
@libreleah
Laptop without RAM beeps!... It's also a bit arty!
(I assume it means no ram inside... I might check it if I get the T61 manual)...
If someone in Germany or CZ or Austria or Poland or around wants a free half-dead T61 Lenovo laptop let me know !
Pretty solid one...
