This is why we will win (if #threads ever fully federates). Over time, people will recognize that algos and ads serve the interests of the platform owners (and maybe the top .0001% of most popular accounts) over those of the users. Your time on social media can be spent seeing stuff from the people you follow (and what they boost), or what the platform owner decides you should see. What you want is not what they want. Given the choice, people will avoid ads and algos.

@wjmaggos Ok I have evidence / observation otherwise. You can see for yourself (if you agree it's a close parallel and without hating on anyone in my examples below)

█ People (maybe incl you) use google youtube links already... on Mastodon... that is very similar to choosing and not choosing ads... some *may* have browser extensions (and say so) but my experience from peppering people with invidious links and explaining No ads / less tracking still I see they use the same direct links to Google / YouTube...

█ while at the same not supporting invidious link or proxy-like filtering site for links e.g. redirect.invidious.io/

█ Gargron saying "it's upto others" (paraphrase but wasn't much of a different long answer) and himself doesn't acknowledge the eventual anti-ggl alignment or big supply we are giving them now with millions of links p£r day / per click... 🐭

Clearly there is a reason for Mastodon being different and yes it might be a bit push to say this is continuation of the whole effort and even movement(s).

BUT at some point we might agree ALL FREE / TYPE STUFF NEED TO LINK ARMS, ELSE JUST FEED BAD THINGS / LEAVE BIG GAPS / NOT EVOLVE which opposition does).

So "Given the choice, people will" NOT "avoid ads and algos." THEY WILL BEAR IT AND TREAT IT AS NORMAL unless they have real bee in their bonnet to change links / change app / change phone even as it's too easy to use that.

Quite a few devs didn't change from my constant mentioning / pasting alt links (my account is full of these replies and short polite copy and pastes)

Another evidence you can observe:

█ Count how many times at a party or with friend they play a song and then ADVERT comes up audibly and like an idiot every time swear or run to their phone to wait for the timer to click skip...

If one really thought about it - they would have found another way BUT THEY CONTINUE TO CLICK SKIP.
