I love Harry Turtledove's books, and I would happily pay a reasonable price for a copy, but for $50 he should come over and mow my lawn while I'm reading it.

Because that comment sounds very paradoxical - consider you say you love the books (more than one) inferring perhaps by that the consistent quality of the authors other books you'd like to see continue, and have got happiness elsewhere from same author) and you say you will happily pay... but for 50 of your cheaper-by-the-day bucks means you question it in comparison to that all?
Surely it's worth much more to you and wouldn't be going to a bad place even if it turned out to be a flop for you...
So I call you out nicely here (reminds me of not paying for software I've actually been using for YEARS and still thinking it's too much to give them but this might be different)
I really think you're being cheap here in your love and happiness for so long (divide by years it you have to) and actually should pay right now if there is a chance author gets a % of that and barring reservations for paying on Amazon then just get it there or elsewhere ➡️ now!
I feel like I'm on a mission to get good people recognised and even some money for what they do / already invested themselves and probably didn't get paid fully in whole yet compared to the time / risk / others involved etc !
Said with love for authors / good / truthful / talented people! And respect for you...

So by your logic of needing my example - now go buy it!
Don't make it too personal - you either appreciate the author that much over the years or you don't or can say it's for 3 books or ave $1 a week and buy it next year - whatever works for you.
I also think people that could pay $30 easily almost always have easy money to pay more, it's just hard to part with it.
You judge yourself and consider I did already me. Now you do you and consider buying whenever / ask as a part-present from family whatever! Don't make me look for evidence why you can pay it and prove it to you. Acting on my own words should already be enough proof I mean what I said and you can find a way over time if nothing. But excuses will win probably so just let me know and quote my amazon code #IMALLTALK - Oh no I take it back you're a teacher, I concede.
