Here's my week setting up Mastodon, in 36 seconds.
@nullagent Nice video - rather big 39mb (if it gets distributed and if it's true that's massive storage everywhere). If I'm not correct sorry.
Right now 39mb copied and even for time downloading for 30s is quite poor in terms of what it could be (there is a bit of comparison here but imagine longer video length on youtube or most places for 39mb and not 30seconds).
For speed, time downloading, Fediverse then consider a small version (like even 1/10th for small usage or small screens)
AND THEN if people want bigger version they can ask you for disposable version.
This is not a telling off :) I do care about big file size (if it gets copied around) and also I'm using minimal near modem speed so I was both delighted and disappointed for 30secs (took longer to download / most have probs playing that 9000kbs bitrate!)
What do you think for much small filesize first and then more if asked or linked elsewhere.

Not many care when it's so easy and fast. You literally have to do the maths and morality with it for seemingly small stuff - which across many users is huge consumption....
But as always it's not what the bad do, it's what the good don't do (consume carefully and calculating of it)
@nullagent Interesting point by @freeschool , I notice that many time images on fedi instanc3s wil not be available for me to view. It took a long time for me to realize it was because the image is very large, and my client was dribbling it in slowly, but not giving me any indication that's what was happening. When I watched your video, my client stopped to buffer it several times. I went to replay it, and even tho it was still on the screen, my client redownloaded it to view it a second time.
On wifi that isn't a big deal, but mobile data would take a double hit for that.
Acknowledged, I use a huge variety of 3rd party apps, right now this is on tooot, but the slow downloads happen on android mastodon and tusky as well.
