"Free" philosophy can be a major block to progress between people... Some people like things dirty / paid too and don't want it free...
@izzy@kanoa.de 2 main points already said in above CW short title...
And written fast so hope you can read fast...
1/ Some people like things dirty... (no really seriously they like paying and won't stand for less and yes it is different service / advantage / result often).
Sex or software isn't the best example but ok I'd actually take paying for sex AS BEST example you can't get that for free / instantly without tons of investment of time and emotional baggage and even then it's not free (this is not the best suggested example but by your bad example I prove it).
Easy to say sex or software - not always easy to do or works at all.
And in software sometimes you need to know programming (Linux still needing command line for grandma to use, cum-on)... Still these programming style OS's don't have it all and needs hacker style knowledge even if it's hacker level 1 and we laugh at anyone that can follow a small tutorial, still not easy and honestly I wouldn't recommend it to people. Yeah pay for Windows 7- far better for average and perhaps Window 15 for no-other-way cases -
So I agree there though many OS's and they go MUCH better but only 'just recently' !! Just booting and partition was a nightmare and 'other' tools made USB boot possible or multiboot - not even the OS it self always... #YUMI being best perhaps.
So almost the other way around - paid is what people respect (for mixed reasons) and won't have the other way because it does fall in line and do many things in more of a certain way -
I admit that and the others normies I've talked to about about 'free' also want for paid eco system in life not in software but I'd say for 'most' systems or ways of doing things as a lot is broken - socially or otherwise...
And I start to see their logic from nobody taking my services for free and then charging a small amount suddenly means I'm in and makes a binary difference or at least more saleable. Go figure... but I bet you think it's ok to buy your vegetables and not even prepared to start (not ad-hominem stuff here but are you growing shit / prepared to learn the code of nature or buy it in from mono-crops and china?)
2/ So the whole philosophy of free can be a major block because it expects people to accept all-in that that's 'the way' first and almost even before usage and aims to transition them towards learning more stuff (which is good but also maybe a bit too much for software or OS to ask sometimes)...
I accept many will never transition and is different to #software as example (where people expect it all for free and obviously reaching #life crisis / crises - ask any coder / admin) but overall is good and as long as free doesn't make more advert link farms (sorry Mastodon you could do better to offer better link to all these youtube links especially when #invidious was more working, example...)
https://pol1.iv.ggtyler.dev/feed/popular
... and doesn't help BigTech boys for free... like all these adfarms running free stuff to ruing the world and give them leverage using free software ....
then aside that it's great!
And maybe it will be for good and arguable has done...
