Isn't "design constraints" a contradiction in terms?

The main purpose of design is to solve functional problems within constraints. If the design itself creates constraints, it's failed to serve its own purpose.

@siblingpastry @Binder the design of nail clippers constrains my ability to cut multiple nails at once, but that constraint enables me to trim my nails without worrying about losing fingertips

@masukomi Fair point. I guess what I'm really referring to is unwanted constraints, rather than constraints that are designed to exist. @Binder

@siblingpastry @masukomi @Binder Yes if you look at the sentence as two words.

I think it also crosses itself from 'who' made the design (as the authority perhaps) or overall determining factor to the project which then makes "design constraints" as a way of limiting such project or being limited in scope deliberately (even to not solve everything).

Also how much you can spend, how big it can be, what it's made for (and not made for) can be part of the meta design. which can also be seen as 1 term and not two words seen as contradicting. Similar to saying 'design requirements / considerations / limitations / project scope.'
