with wheatear, ortolan bunting and whinchat 121 species on the #localpatch #lowcarbonbirding - spring rocks
end of march, today at 100 species for the local patch with hoopoe and osprey , two nice adds #LocalBigYear #lowcarbonbirding
watch out for #amphibians , too many deaths on roads already again! migration is happening now (and most cars ignore them - this is so sad)

spring is coming - but it is dry!
while out for a walk I made a picture of the dry conditions in the landscape and checked the national database. Looks like we set a national negative record for the top soil humidity for the driest region in Germany currently - not good! . (data ufz - duerremonitor).
after doing a bit of gardening lately I noticed dry soil up to 1 min depth- so I checked the national maps - again/still on the very much extreme in our area - not too promising news for spring https://www.ufz.de/index.php?de=37937
quite worrying: rainwater has no drinkable quality across the world even in remote locations

69 species after two weeks with #lowcarbonbirding #localBigYear - including ring-necked and ferruginous duck, great bitterns and others.... the year has started well.
"Rabbits, hares & pikas could become this century’s new climate migrants – with up to 2/3 of species forced to relocate. There are almost certainly going to be extinctions among some of the more sensitive & less adaptable species."🐇

I've seen some consternation about the (very) extreme #temperature predictions over Europe. For context, I've created a GIF of the predictions (also hindsight) by the #ECMWF for appx the first two weeks of january.
These are temperature anomalies, and they have been very extreme. The "cooler" temperatures predicted for the coming days are still well above average.
Interesting piece in the #Nature journal about the #birdsite and its importance in #science.

As a very recent arrival on #Mastodon and in the #Fediverse, I'm seeing far more engagement here than on Twitter, despite having far fewer followers here.
Being here feels like the earlier days on Twitter, where posts are generously shared and where there is a genuine sense of building and supporting a community
I hope this continues and that the wider #Science and #Environment communities and also #universities jump on board.
For a now slightly dated view (in Nature) of the merits of Mastodon for scientists, see also this:
