I had a nice week at #iaglr23 Hosting sessions on #microplastics and #wetlands as #keystone ecosystems. #toronto had great weather and the trees bloomed. The lieutenant governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell spoke, calling for increased support for #GreatLakes #science. We need a decadal science plan and we need the #usa and #canada to fund it.
@DrPlanktonguy thanks Warren. I’m actually Canadian co-chair of the IJC’s RCC and was engaged in the process of developing the Strategy. Our next step, though, is implementation. The devil is always in the details 😁. How do we bring the Strategy to life? That’s why we are now initiating a new working group to develop a Science PLAN. Val ump and Gail Krantzberg are leading the charge and hosted a town hall at #iaglr23.
@girls_can yes I know about your leadership on this!👍 I always add the link to let everyone read the decadal strategy. Was there much interaction in the townhall? We have been involved since the beginning of the process, but DFO is also one of the primary agencies that will be responsible for implementing the strategy. That is why it is important to maintain momentum because there is currently no dedicated #GreatLakes funding here to move these recommendations forward. #Science
@DrPlanktonguy there was a lot of great feedback. People were a bit slow at first but it turned into a fantastic discussion as people warmed up and started sharing their opinion. There will be lots more opportunities to engage in the Plan coming up for those who missed the Town Hall. Thanks for sharing the Strategy link!
@girls_can here is the link to the Great Lakes Science Strategy for the Next Decade. A lot of work went into this advice to IJC. I wasn't able to join at #IAGLR this year, but I am glad Her Honour spoke of it.
