Steam Deck and SteamOS are great for Linux as a whole - Open Source Summit Europe 2023 https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2023/09/steam-deck-and-steamos-are-great-for-linux-as-a-whole/
@gamingonlinux the fact that Windows is no longer needed for a huge chunk of the Steam library is HUGE!
@gpowerf @gamingonlinux an underrated side benefit of the Steam Deck is that users get eased into a Linux environment with literally zero stress initially. But Desktop Mode is right there if you want it too
@ouij @gamingonlinux Totally.
An Arch-based Linux distro with an immutable file system wouldn't be my first choice as a daily driver desktop OS. But yeah, it will get users exploring and considering switching to Linux :)
@ouij @gamingonlinux To me, it is just a console :) No different to a Switch or Xbox.
ChimeraOS or any other SteamOS-like distro though on a desktop, it's a nice second OS. One OS for work and daily tasks, and another for gaming.
@dolmen @gpowerf @gamingonlinux for me it’s my first time back on KDE in a while. I last daily-drove desktop Linux about a decade ago, and that was mostly Gnome and XFCE
@gpowerf @ouij @gamingonlinux Every use beyond the Steam environment (others stores, emulation, switching BT keyboard layout...) requires to enter the desktop mode. Those will be the first steps on a KDE desktop for a new crowd.
