I think 2024/2025 could be the years that VR gaming becomes mainstream, especially if the rumored Lite is released. If it is indeed as affordable as expected ($200) it could be the VR headset that the masses buy simply to try out VR. If the price point is indeed so low it could be a device that families but several times over too in order to play together. I don't know what is planning, but there's a small chance that it is VR related and this could have an impact too.

What do you think? By 2025 we'll be doing more more in ?

@gpowerf I can only talk for me, but one of the key points for mass success would require VR headsets to be more comfortable to wear. With most of current day's sets, I'm a sweaty mess within 30 minutes of play. The technology is already great, but comfort is lacking in my opinion.

@gpowerf Not until they solve the motion sickness issues
America is a huge market for gaming but they also have an immense amount of those prone to motion sickness

As long as they haven't solved that I don't think VR gaming will truly take off, I hope one day it does get good because it seems like a ton of fun to play RPGs in VR

@Rana This is a good point. Meta is an American company and they will no doubt try and tap into their domestic market first, I hadn't factored in motion sickness.

There are studies on how to mitigate motion sickness, but it is very early days! Perhaps we will learn how to reduce it to a point where it is a non-issue for most.

@gpowerf
I have my doubts; it's not so much price point so much as it is its inherent nicheness. Why play VR when you have a screen? What benefit do the very few VR-only games have that regular ones do? Not to mention motion sickness is still a thing...

@gpowerf it's been years and every vr game still looks like a 4 minute novelty. It's a strong no for me.

@gpowerf I'd need a headset my glasses could fit inside. Otherwise my interest will remain nil by then.

@gpowerf Platforms need system sellers. On consoles it's usually exclusives like Gears of War on #Xbox or God of War on #Playstation. If the content is there in abundance and high quality, the price point of the device itself does not matter as much.

For #quest3 , the system seller could be the announced Assassin's Creed Nexus. Maybe it's even the Xbox Game Pass, which basically turns your $500 headset into an Xbox.

For #VR in general, modders will continue to take care of us. 😀

@gpowerf I’m not sure VR gaming is really the brass ring. We’ve had PSVR for 8 years, Question for 5, and we’ve yet to see a breakthrough title. Why would the Quest 3 change anything?

AR gaming might be the “killer app” for headsets, but that’s still very much up in the air. There are many more compelling uses for AR than gaming, but very few devs exploring any of those.

I’m thinking Apple’s transitional approach might be the right one.
