Here's some alternatives to the Unity game engine https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2023/09/heres-some-alternatives-to-the-unity-game-engine/
Fuck it. #YOLO
#Bluesky continues to be entirely non-responsive to the numerous security vulnerabilities I've reported to them, so I spent the evening writing up a nice README and a framework with exploit modules, and just made it all public.
Have fun.
@ThePrimo yep... it is indeed. Plus culturally it's unacceptable to not do alt-text, so it's not the platform to share photos quickly.
Essentially, use for text, and upload photos elsewhere. 🤷♂️
@trinsec I am not 100% sure I have to admit. I think that previous installs don't count, but if your game exists right now then the charges start in 2024 even if the game was developed in the past. They said: "Effective 1st January, 2024, we will introduce a new Unity Runtime Fee that’s based on game installs. We will also add cloud-based asset storage, Unity DevOps tools, and AI at runtime at no extra cost to Unity subscription plans this November."
It's not a new runtime with a new fee, they made it sound like it was a new fee for the existing runtime.
@gamingonlinux @godotengine indeed :) this was my first thought when I heard about the change, the beneficiary will be open source.
One of the massive perks of working from home is being able to use a mechanical #keyboard without it being antisocial.
I find myself wondering what #Unity stupidity means for game preservation.
Many games are likely to be pulled and the devs are likely to do everything possible to stop users from installing these games.
Are these games lost forever? Not able to be preserved?

I experienced a new bug on #SteamDeck yesterday where the SD card would not mount after a reboot.
The issue was fixed this morning 💪 #gamingonlinux
@carnage4life As a company grows and lasts longer, it develops more processes to manage its operations. This can make the company slow and rigid, while a smaller startup that has not faced many challenges is more agile and flexible.
However, this also creates an opportunity for the startup to compete with the larger companies and disrupt the market. If the startup succeeds in becoming huge, it may also face the same problems of processes and bureaucracy that limit its growth. Then, another startup may emerge and challenge it.
This in some roundabout way is the market balancing itself.
@carnage4life The more devs and other users are pushed and punished financially the more open source alternatives we will have.
Even if Unity backtracks on this I think the reputational damage has been done and Unity might be done for as a popular game engine.
Long-term open-source projects like Godot may benefit from this as they gain popularity as a Unity alternative.
@noelreports he does look quite full, but as far as I understand he is the world's best golfer.
Asking if Elon Musk firing everyone in sight and also ignoring the concerns of privacy & policy teams at Twitter led to jeopardizing data privacy and security is like asking if ice cream melts on a sunny day.
As someone who has first hand knowledge of what it means to comply with FTC consent orders, every accountable senior privacy & policy person resigning within weeks of Elon’s chaos monkey antics was everything I needed to know.

Looking at the situation with #Unity just boggles my mind. Like it’s already an engine used by a ton of indie games, to the point those are basically it’s main audience now.
So it then pulls an anti #gamedev move like this that could bankrupt many of its most avid users and advocates? Are they absolutely insane?
@CM30 the outcome will be either a walk back from Unity or the death of Unity as a popular game engine. Or in fact, even both! There's a chance that even after a walk back devs will have lost enough confidence in Unity not to touch it again.
Longer term the outcome might also be a strong open source alternative to Unity. I'm not a game dev and I'm not super familiar with different alternatives, but everyone falling behind something like Godot Engine might be a sensible outcome.
I’ve made it to a Diamond rank in #Farlight84
I’m really loving this little game! I may never touch #HaloInfinite or #Exoprimal again.

This is my fun social media account, I will post a lot of video game stuff (mostly old or cloud gaming) and some work stuff.
If I post an image with no Alt text it is because the image is just there for decoration and doesn't provide any extra meaning to the toot.
