a side point in this tweet: Greta Thunberg had to confirm that this is indeed her account on a different platform because doesn't have a verification system. I am new here but this strikes me as a problem going forward.

@herid In Account settings > Profile > Appearance, any user can put their existing profile or website in Profile metadata, and link back to the profile according to the instruction to verify the link. Public figures usually have some existing profile they can edit somewhere. A kind of outsourcing the verification.

That said, this is not as convenient as the Twitter checkmark since I have to click into a profile, then click through to an external website to actually check the verification.

@kemuri thanks. didn't know about this. it's something but not a substitute for a true verification system. I do realize the latter would require a lot of resources but it seems to me Mastodon will have to deal with it sooner or later just as twitter had to.
