@herid In Account settings > Profile > Appearance, any user can put their existing profile or website in Profile metadata, and link back to the #mastodon profile according to the instruction to verify the link. Public figures usually have some existing profile they can edit somewhere. A kind of outsourcing the verification.
That said, this is not as convenient as the Twitter checkmark since I have to click into a profile, then click through to an external website to actually check the verification.
@kemuri thanks. didn't know about this. it's something but not a substitute for a true verification system. I do realize the latter would require a lot of resources but it seems to me Mastodon will have to deal with it sooner or later just as twitter had to.
