🇺🇦 Ukrainian Elina Svitolina says war in her homeland has made her mentally stronger after she reached a surprise #Wimbledon semi-final.
Just three months after returning to the tour, having had a baby in October, she beat top seed Iga Swiatek 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 in the last eight.
She said she was glad to "bring a little happiness" to Ukrainians and that war had altered her perspective

Can hydrogen powered plants turn steel production 'green'?
The production of steel today still means the release of a lot of climate-damaging CO2. Globally, the steel industry is responsible for a 6 percent of Co2 emissions. The aim is to change this as quickly as possible. In the future, hydrogen could replace coal, which is currently used to melt steel.

When I started on Mastodon, people would advise me to “only Boost posts.” Since there’s no algorithm that places a value on Favorites, “only Boosts have value.”
I disagree completely.
When people Favorite my posts, they unwittingly introduce themselves to me. I have discovered some very interesting people that I may not have if they didn’t Favorite my posts.
Keep ‘em coming. It’s nice to meet you.

Good morning, readers: Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands. But, last night the city endured its first air raid in 12 days. As Ukrainians deal with the 493rd day of war, some turn to escapism in the form of tabletop role-playing games. http://counteroffensive.news
Notwithstanding the angst of some politicians or analysts about developments in the Ukrainian offensives, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are making steady, if not rapid, progress. It is much too early to judge the Ukrainian 2023 offensives a success or failure just yet.
My latest assessment of the Ukrainian offensives at Futura Doctrina.

I'm a lapsed #mastodon user who started off here after the first #twittermigration and yes, I gravitated back to #Twitter, and I'm sorry but my friends were and still are over there. And many #mastodon users, especially the early users and the migrators who were able to transition over without much hassle might criticise those of us who started with good intentions, but it's not through lack of trying.
I've had my Twitter account since 2007, I started it at my workplace after a training session about Web 2.0 and Twitter. Do you remember when we were all super excited about the prospect of an interactive internet where we could interact with webpages? Social media was in its infancy, the world hadn't completely lost their mind.
Since then I've had my account and made lots of friends, I have taken so much value from the content, so many connections. And then #Elon happened. I will never delete my Twitter account, and like many fellow Twitterers when it calms down and feels a bit more 'normal' I slip back into old habits.
But when Elon rises his head and makes a change it brings it back the fact it is turning into some dystopian billionaire hellhole whilst he tries to coax us to pay him money. And we start to grieve what we lost. Grief is a difficult and gnarly emotion, and I would speculate many Twitterers that do care, are in denial.
Be nice to us. We are trying to migrate but it's hard. It will be hard, it's like giving up smoking. Some find it easy, others less so. If the restrictions ARE temporary, some might go back. Others might finally stick, but beyond perceived loyalty, for many it is a process.

Are you new here? Giving this place another try? Welcome!
I've been here for a few months and the best advice I've gotten so far is: Follow a lot of people. Like a lot. Like way more than you would have on the other site.
If you're worried about losing track of certain people/issues in the flood of your Home feed, use lists (and the advanced view on the web interface): https://mastodon.social/@design_law/109358875682926700
A side note: I cannot recommend any of the other private alternatives to Twitter, including Bluesky, Spoutible, or Post.
Any private platforms are subject to the same risks that have befallen Twitter. Also, Dorsey and Musk share the same worldview. Mastodon is at least open, and your data is portable.
Students are such grifters. Why should I pay for your student loans? Make better choices. Get a job! Anyway, can't stay and chat, off to meet my billionaire buddies for a fishing trip in my honor on an otherwise unoccupied (and therefore worth $0) private jet flight to laugh about forgiven PPP-loans
