unlike yesterday, today's visual clue was excellent. I am still chuckling about it.

I will just post this from time to time because #Apple is still freaking advertising on #twitter. And now Ellon is using this to say "If Apple and Disney are advertising, it means it is safe for others to do so".

it turns out just got rid of the state affiliated labels **altogether**. they are now gone from **everybody**. RT, Novosti, Xinhua, IRNA and every other state propagandist. they are also gone from public broadcasters like NPR and CBC but that's hardly a comfort. I wonder if this was his plan all along and that's why he went after NPR first. so that he could look even handed now and say "no labels", see, isn't that better?

What is the nearest big city to where you live? How has the climate already changed there?

You can now explore and download Warming Stripes graphics for over 450 cities around the world. They show how temperatures have already changed over the last 100+ years.

And, all the warming stripes have been updated to include 2022, with many extended back further in time.

Here is Simonyan crowing about it and thanking Elon for his "brotherly action". She is Putin's Goebbels btw. one of the most odious and enthusiastic cheerleaders of the genocide of Ukraine.

I am only surprised he didn't pay for her verification from his pocket. since this is apparently a thing now, what's another 8 bucks among friends, eh Elon?

Just when you think he can't do any worse he does. has removed "state affiliated" labels from RT and other Kremlin propagandists. now CBC and NPR have labels but RT does not.

The right-wing Republican “Montana Freedom Caucus” is seeking censure of their transgender colleague who spoke about the life-destroying consequences that will follow from anti-transgender legislation these Republican state legislators support. Their objection to what she said? Basically, “how dare she make us feel bad about our wanting to do something awful.” apnews.com/article/transgender

The official Mastodon app is doing something new which is potentially very dangerous to the existence of Mastodon and the Fediverse.

The official Mastodon app now prompts users to join mastodon.social by default, when previously it prompted them to pick a server. If you're new this may sound harmless, but let me explain.

The entire point of this place is to be a social network spread out on as many servers as possible (the reasons are here: fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse).

There's a superficial outer layer of number theory that's about hard puzzles like Fermat's Last Theorem and Goldbach's conjecture, but to me the interesting part of number theory has always been about general principles.

For example Galois theory is about how in a given language the only concepts you can express are those invariant under the symmetries of the interpretation of that language: this is why Galois invented groups and used them to decide when you can or cannot solve a polynomial equation using radicals.

Then Grothendieck generalized the concept of "space" to the point where even fields like the integers mod 5 can be seen as fields of functions on some sort of space (called a "scheme"). In this new outlook, Galois groups become symmetry groups of covering spaces, and many problems in number theory turn into problems of topology - but topology of a new generalized sort!

Pushing forward with this, people have found an amazing analogy between prime numbers and knots. My friend Minhyong Kim has applied ideas from gauge theory to number theory. And other people have shown there's a hugely generalized Galois group that's involved in renormalization.

So, number theory keeps expanding our concepts of number, space, logic and symmetry. And a lot of the resulting ideas are pretty simple and fundamental! - though you might never know unless you dig through piles of distractions.

If you ever want to learn more about this, about the most readable introduction is here:

• Pierre Cartier, A mad day's work: from Grothendieck to Connes and Kontsevich: the evolution of concepts of space and symmetry. ams.org/journals/bull/2001-38-

It's not easy, but you can skim it and get a feel for it.

Talking to someone I said:

"By the way, I've been studying number theory. While it takes a long time to get to the really cool stuff, which is not about silly puzzles, when you finally do it's philosophically profound and quite amazing!"

They replied:

"How is it philosophically profound? Category theory has that feel. What about number theory?"

That's a great question, because when you first bump into number theory it may not feel that way!

So I thought I should share my answer.

😂 “ #Florida Gov. #DeSantis foiled by Disney once again.
The new board DeSantis appointed to oversee the company’s Orlando theme parks has discovered new wrinkle in its plans. The board’s chairman said that another “11th hour agreement” was signed before the board took over that allows #Disney to set its own utility rates for its resorts through 2032. By that time, DeSantis, who is term-limited and cannot run for reelection in 2026, will be long gone.”
