All,
I've gotten a small team together and we have started development on the Mastodon server for the disability community.
I am in the process of outlining some additional roles we will need to fill to make this succeed, and will put out a solicitation for that at a later date.
I am also making an outline for the information database we want to build, and will likely recruit people (or solicit information) for various pieces of it.
“A study recently published in Animal Behavior suggests that bumblebees, when given the chance, like to fool around with toys.”
This list of #journalists on Mastodon has absolutely taken on a life of its own. 🔥
It's now grown to over 540 journalists and shows no signs of stopping. I do quality control and check it every day to clean up.

Looking to follow more plant science folks who aren't primarily doing molecular biology. Old school botany, pomology, horticulture, anyone? #PlantScience #Botany #Pomology #Biology #ScienceMastodon
Hello Mastodon art people! I’m Julia, an illustrator and naturalist from Germany. I’ve quit all social media a few years ago because addictive algorithms, ads, infinite scrolling and tracking surveillance were killing my creativity.
Mastodon is likely the last social media experiment I’ll try. Here are some birds for you, because although I’ve left Twitter, I love drawing birds.

#EarthquakeReport for M 6.9 #Earthquake in Taiwan on 18 September 2022
there was lots of damage and some casualties :-(
landslides and liquefaction models show that there was a high likelihood for these.

i am filling in some #EarthquakeReport #Toots as I just got my website back up and running after almost two months of arduous work (steep learning curve getting web services set up on a robust server)
Mastodon is really having a moment in mainstream news coverage. CNN, BBC, TIME, etc.
The influx of users will continue at an alarming rate. Remember to be welcoming, and kind, and positive, and helpful.
This isn't just an opportunity to improve the idea of social media, it's an opportunity to shine a wonderful light on #opensource.
Greetings tooters!

His main education/outreach effort is voluntarily writing up #EarthquakeReport posts on earthjay.com. These are for #earthquake and #tsunami events of interest, sorted in different ways; sorted by year here: https://earthjay.com/?page_id=3220

capital letters are over rated but chocolate and oxford commas are not.
Twitter was really useful for finding people to write about. I’d often stumble across incredible stories of discovery, innovation and leadership. I hope #ScienceMastodon can be the same. If you come across extraordinary, inspirational #WomenInSTEM / researchers from other historically excluded groups, please let me know! #TwitterMigration
@maryeffrancis Great question!
Some basics of social media #accessibility that are useful for pretty much all platforms:
- capitalize each word in multi-word hashtags
- add alt text to your images. Actually describe the image; don't just use the space for jokes or Easter eggs
- don't overuse emojis (the screen reader reads each one)
- if you create videos, caption them
- if you share a video that doesn't have captions, provide a description
Did you know that if you capitalize each word in a multi-word hashtag, #ScreenReaders can read them as words, but if you leave them lowercase, they can't? Well, now you know! So, for #accessibility, please capitalize words when there's more than one in a hashtag.
@explorergrace Hi Grace, hope you will remind people about the wonderful tradition here of using Alt text. It makes me as a blind person feel very welcome, and not all newcomers are getting the memo. Thanks.

Well I suppose it's time to re-introduce myself.
I'm a relatively late in career returnee to geology; my science is highly operationalised, i'm a #geohazard analyst shift leader at the #NGMC - National Geohazards Monitoring Centre - part of the #Geonet program here at #GNS Science in #Aotearoa #NZ.
Yes, it's shift work; we're right at the sharp pointy end of geohazard response, in a 24/7 operation. Varied interests, most recently working on #Taupo #seismicity analysis, and a W-phase project.
Hi everyone, I’m Dr Scott J. Davidson - Lecturer in Ecosystem Resilience working on all things #wetlands and #peatlands ! Big fan of swamps, sphagnum and my cat Ralph
