... continued ...
My theory is, that the fundamental problem/cause is the contemporary construction of #socialstatus.
As long as social status and perception of achievement is strongly tied to travelling, big houses, excessive consumption, big cars, new electronics gadgets, higher resolution/power/throughput/definition everything .. people will be more or less indifferent about the negative impact of their pursuit of higher status ..
I'm very much convinced that lacking education isn't the (at least not the biggest) problem.
As far as my perception of the people whose behavior I can watch in my everyday life goes, well educated people who even remotely behave according to their knowledge of what kind of behaviour is damaging/less damaging to the environment .. these people are really hard to find.
That's what I'm saying.
I wouldn't bet on plants - as beatiful, wonderful, versatile and multi purposeful as they are - being more efficient at removing CO2 from the atmosphere than technical solutions.
I've come across at least one scientific publication that stated that photosynthesis is rather inefficient at capturing the energy of sun light and converting it into chemical compound, compared to apparatuses.
"... For example, when an affordable, high-performing RISC-V chip is released, we will design a motherboard version around it that you can swap into an existing Reform chassis."
Can you make any statement (no matter how vague) as to when a version with RISC-V could become available?
Like, 2 years? Or rather 5?
Yep, we need #openSourceHardware / #openHardware that is ideally crowdfunded ... at a scale that at least takes it in the direction of being competitive price wise ... #fairphone was/is a good start, but at 500€ it's rather unaffordable for many people.
Generally, there need to be #openSource projects that attract enough people/users to form a community where people can help each other out.
The way I see it, one main reason why projects like #lineageOS (or open source projects in general) have a hard time attracting a broader user base which would in turn boost their ability to provide decent support ... is ... that the hard-working developers are scattered across many different branches/sub-projects/devices ... that's a clear disadvantage the open-source community has compared to lets say Apple, who only have very few variants of their devices.
So what could be done?
I think people should try to stick to devices/projects/software that follow the most important (political/technological) principles but _still_ have a big user base ... getting an exotic device will maybe fulfill special combinations of personal requirements, but it will also require spending more time to troubleshoot/maintain.
#RiscV for smartphones and laptops will hopefully be a thing in the near future

@hippolyte@mastodon.social ... or, like me, get an account on https://qoto.org ... the character limit on there is like 65.000 ...
I totally agree here with @hypolite
Also, I'm quite sure there's a clear tendency that it's generally the richest people who can afford to buy "green" products, who still have the biggest environmental footprints ... because they simply consume a big proportion of the most resource hungry goods. Think flights, meat, cars ...

Your paper about #PIM (https://karl-voit.at/tagstore/en/papers.shtml) is an awesome resource for interesting software and concepts. Haven't finished reading yet and already have a few things I want to try.

Yep, I know .. I was merely pointing out that it *would* be awesome *if* they worked together to develop a laptop
