#Mozilla has announced that they are closing their Mastodon instance.
But at least, they are hiring a lot, which is nice.
Like:
- Machine Learning Engineer, Gen AI
- Principal Product Manager, Generative AI
- Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Gen AI
- …
Wait, are there hiring for something else than AI ?
Of course:
- Senior Staff Software Engineer, Ads
- Client Analytics Manager
- Product Policy Manager, Ads
- …
You wrote about the #riscv #frameworklaptop:

Question: which are those other 2 RISC-V laptops?
What the ...? #Android "file manager" app "Files" deletes #EXIF #GPS tags when "copying" a jpg photo file.
What kind of file manager modifies a file's content when "copying"?
I mean, sorry, this is just inacceptible. Hey #Google, remove your dirty ass fingers from my data!
I don't care whether oh so privacy friendly Google wants to protect me from accidently exposing some GPS coordinates.
A file manager JUST DOES NOT MODIFY FILES WHILE COPYING, PERIOD!

Hey @thunderbird .. after the latest update you kindly asked for a donation to keep the project alive.
Well, I will indeed consider donating to #thunderbird .. I'll do so IF you STOP needlessly changing the UI every few versions.
The previous UI (~ v 102) was .. absolutely fine.
Now it is - yet again - noticeably slower. And the message list has too much contrast.
It's just frustrating .. to see great software that once was perfectly snappy on my old machine become slower with every update.
Thought:
The key aspect that will make the space elevator possible will be, I think:
The cable/tether will be made from a material which can be continuously repaired while in use by enzymatic processes.
Maybe it's #graphene or #cnt but it might also be some bio polymer like lignin or chitin.
I also think the structure of the cable will be made up of tubes and it'll be porous, so that it can be locally infused with a solution containing enzymes and other molecules for repair.
Fascinating blog post about the increasing challenges #electricgrid s and power plant operators are facing due to the dynamics introduced into the system by prioritizing #renewables generation.

(I might mention that I am all for #renewableenergy .. but as someone with a bit more interest and education in science & technology than average I see challenges here that appear to be insufficiently addressed by current policies)

Risks to Mastodon with increasing popularity
Interesting comment on Hackernews regarding a possible scenario/long term risk should Mastodon threaten the corporate sphere of social media.
Is anyone else annoyed by the Android keyboard frequently suggesting "DIW" when they wanted to write "die" (German article)?
I have literally had to correct this probably like 200 times. Including such a rarely used acronym in the dictionary almost feels like a dark pattern.
Is there an easy way to exclude such acronyms from the dictionary?
There appear to be efforts to make the #SHIFT6mq work with #postmarketOS (https://fosstodon.org/@calebccff/108245399359103437).
Are there any plans to support bringing pmOS also to the #SHIFT5me ? Could you maybe supply the pmOS-devs (@bart) with a 5me as well, so they can work on it?
This would be awesome, as I really like the #shifphones philosphy and the combination with pmOS would be perfect, but I can't afford a #SHIFT6mq .

@cryptpad ... :-| ... sorry for bothering you with this ... I just found the button to collapse the top bar ... issue resolved.
@cryptpad ... a question about the #cryptpad GUI: would it be possible to make the layout more compact and free up some height so there's more space for the content of a spreadsheet and less scrolling is needed?
Here's a screenshot where it looks like there's some mostly unused space (red) that could show document content instead. Would need some rearranging of GUI elements of course.
I'm already careful with trying use settings for my GUI that save as much screen height as possible but still only about half of my screen ends up showing document content.
Thanks anyway for the awesome platform.
When I installed and launched the android #manyverse app I looked at the getting started guide: https://scuttlebutt.nz/get-started/FAQ
It states:
"The first time you join the network there will be a lot to download and process. For real, this “inital syncing” process can take up to an hour and use a couple of gigabytes."
Is this true for #manyverse as well? Space on a smartphone isn't as plentiful as on a regular computer.
Maybe you could put an answer to that in your https://www.manyver.se/faq
Agreed. At the moment it uses huge amounts of energy.
But. There might be a not so small chance that that's going to change in the future.
The reward for blocks being mined gets halved every 4 years. Unless the price of bitcoin reliably doubles every 4 years as well, this reward will be worth less and less money in the real world.
So the incentive to spend huge amounts of energy could become smaller and smaller.
Which in turn would mean that less energy would be used in total to "mine" coins.
