@pluralistic The bit about the cashless society... CA recently sent me their tax rebate via a debit card. They could have sent a check. But no an ATM card that charged insane fees to use anywhere except CVS and Walgreens ATMs. And those would only dispense 20s while the card was for a number that ended in 50.

I eventually found a way to go online and just transfer the balance to my credit union but what about the people who don't have the (mental or physical) bandwidth to figure all this out?

@anand @pluralistic the same happened to me and had to log in and transfer the money to my account. It was definitely not something easy that any person could do. I can see non-techie people struggling to find the way to do it, as I had to read it online, register on a site with a 2-factor, then link to my bank account and transfer. I wonder how many people couldn’t take all the money from their return. I’m sure it’s like this on purpose.
