Dune part 2 spoilers

I finally, belatedly saw Dune part 2. I didn't like it as well as the first part. I was a bit surprised that they decided to change it so that Alia wasn't born, implying the events of part 2 all took place in a matter of a few months, which is probably why they also wrote out Paul and Chani's first child. It seems like an unnecessary change. I'd say they probably did it for brevity, but those moves could not reasonably be called brief.

I was impressed that they seem to have come up with an entire conlang for Chakobsa; it's been a long time since I read Dune, but IIRC there isn't a whole lot to go on, just a few words and short phrases (i.e. not like Tolkien's elvish or even Klingon in Star Trek).

Dune part 2 spoilers

Finally, by the end of the movie I sort of started feeling like "Lisan al Gaib" is to Dune 2 as "she's my queen" is to GOT season 8 😉

(I don't otherwise mean to compare their quality; I liked the former a *lot* better than the latter.)

@internic Yeah I also wish Paul had spent a few years in the desert becoming Muaddib... Villanueva has talked about why he made the change and said a lot of it had to do with narrative momentum. They also thought the young Alia character would be hard to pull off.

@brianvastag Yeah, I figured the difficulty of pulling off Alia well had to be part of the reason.

Dune part 2 spoilers

@internic @brianvastag pulling off Dune in general is quite hard. A lot of things are nearly impossible to translate to the visual medium. But given the length of the movies I was off-put by how much was culled.

@gabrielesvelto @brianvastag I am really curious what people who had never read the books thought of it (which I'm sure I can find out online). It seems like many aspects wouldn't make much sense, since the necessary background wasn't explained. But, as you said, it's hard to translate many aspects to the screen (without clunky things like lengthy voiceovers).

Dune part 2 spoilers

@internic @gabrielesvelto I saw part 2 with someone who hasn't read any Dune and he thought it was one of the best films he's ever seen. He seemed to follow it just fine.

re: Dune part 2 spoilers

@internic And your thoughts on Christopher Walken? I like him, but it pulled me out of the movie.

re: Dune part 2 spoilers

@sl38 I often find his manner a bit odd, so I guess he wouldn't have been someone I would have thought to pick if I had been in their shoes, but being eccentric seems reasonable to me for someone who is royalty, so I actually felt it worked okay.

re: Dune part 2 spoilers

@sl38 Also, as one commentary I saw pointed out, arguably Walken has been training to be in Dune for years. 😄
