Microsoft Authenticator needs your phone number and sends data back to Microsoft. If you're on Linux, macOS, or similar, there's a simpler way! oathtool does the same 2FA job, right from your terminal, and keeps your info private. Microsoft just tricket uninformed users and #windowsadmins into thinking a backchannel would be good.
