I'm looking at migrating my account to #Mathstodon. One thing I'd like is the ability to follow people from a wide variety of different places, including Bluesky (via brid.gy) and Threads, if possible. I know that the former is possible on Mathstodon, but I'm trying to figure out if the latter is. It seems like maybe not.
@internic
Well, does Threads have a bridge?
@dougmerritt Presumably, in light of recent events it may have become even more controversial, and it's possible that even those servers that were federating with them (like mastodon.social) may have stopped. I'm not that plugged in to wider Fediverse happenings.
@internic @dougmerritt Quite aside from policy questions, the federation with Threads is pretty limited on the technical side. Users need to opt in, I don't think replies are always shown (to be honest I sort of forgot what does and does not appear), and that sort of thing. On the whole Bridgy Fed to Bluesky works better than Threads federation (although it does have the same issue in terms of needing an opt in).
@internic @dougmerritt Exactly, I don't think mastodon.social is yet blocking Threads although at least as of https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/113794200140617347 they are..... not impressed with Threads moderation policies..... either. Other servers have taken various actions (see https://hub.sfba.social/2025/01/10/federation-changes-with-threads/ for one example although other servers have also made statements/actions). Don't remember about mathstodon.
The moderation policy changes at Meta are deeply troubling and should be a concern to anyone with a conscience. While the fediverse is a decentralized platform where different service providers have different moderation policies, at mastodon.social, hate speech is prohibited, and we will take action on any Threads account found violating our policies. I would strongly urge anyone with a Threads account to reconsider their alignment with the new direction at Meta and move to Mastodon instead.
