VOCABULARY OF 1500 WORDS.
VOCABULARY OF 1500 WORDS.
Simplified English Wanted.
For All Needs.
A vocabulary of from 1300 to 1500
words is enough to express anything
necessary in world trade, diplomatic
exchange, or public addresses, Dr.
Janet Aiken, of the English Depart
ment of Columbia University said re-
cently.
Dr. Aiken will head a committee of
scholars being formed to work out a
system of simplified English, which
can be used as an International langu-
age. She believes it can be done and
without simplified spelling, which she
termed 'anarchy.'
In the opinion of Dr. Aiken, a sys-
tem of English with a vocabulary of
no more than 1500 words would be far
better as an International language
than Esperanto, Ido and other at-
tempts at a universal tongue.
'The trouble with Esperanto and
the others,' she said, 'is that they
start with one people, while English
starts with 240,000,000 people.
'Pidgin English as it is used in
China and in the Pacific Islands is an
adaption of English for International
use, but it is not culturally acceptable
because respectable people won't use
it. A workable aystam must keep to
the language of educated people.
WORLD NEED.
'People all over the world are cry-
ing for an English they can use for
purposes of trade, diplomacy, teach-
ing, and so on, and hundreds of mil-
lions would learn it if they could.'
The trouble with teaching 'literary'
English to foreigners, Dr. Aiken said
lies in its vocabulary of some 280,000
words, the difficulty ot its spelling
and its irrational idioms. At the rate
which people really learn new words,
it would take a foreigner eight years
to learn enough English to read the
'London Times' intelligently, she esti-
mated.
Simplified spelling doesn't help, Dr.
Aiken said, because it doesn't clear up
the difficulties about vocabulary and
idiom. She thinks it much better to
simplify the vocabulary, and she said
that a total of 1500 words is just
enough for the average person to
learn well in a year.

Under review is (ISBN 978-0978292300). Information concerning it may be found here.
In both the spirit of the language, and of sloth, I'll be brief for now. Toki Pona is a constructed language based on ideas of extreme simplicity, with fourteen phonemes and fewer than one hundred and twenty-eight words. It's effectively a cheerful Newspeak, but it's interesting in some ways, mainly in being that simplest constructed language with a critical mass of speakers. I long to truly think in a language other than English, pursuing Toki Pona due to this, although I've not yet achieved it. I'm also particularly interested in Toki Pona as the base for experimentations in language programs.
The first section of the book introduces basic concepts and vocabulary, explains them with examples, and then provides exercises. The second section provides translations, and the third is dictionary.
My primary complaint is the difficulty of obtaining this book from a store. I was only able to find French copies. The book isn't strictly better than other resources, now that I've seen several, but is the canonical resource, and does better address some aspects I've found lacking from others; it's a very light read, and could easily be read in a day with minimal effort, although I typically chose one or two lessons per day; I've retained some of it, but I'll undoubtedly reference it, repeatedly.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be able to say pu with a straight face.

The Mastery of Languages, or the Art of speaking Foreign Tongues idiomatically
Thomas Prendergast | 1864 [p.164]
Thomas Prendergast published this extremely interesting list in 1864, long before Dolch, Fry and others. Long, long before computerized language corpora. And it’s strikingly accurated in many aspects, IMHO - apart from the strange appearance of the word upper, that is.
The list descripted in his own words:
“Annexed is a list of the commonest words of
the language, both declinable and indeclinable.
Four of these, on an average, will be found in
every line of an English book, and in every col-
loquial sentence containing a dozen words. This
list is not to be learned by heart, nor is it intended
to be used in any way by the beginner. Its object
is merely to show which are the most essential
words in all languages, in order that they may be
introduced into the sentences which are to be
translated and given to beginners. There are no
nouns included in the list, because it is for the
learner himself to select and insert those which
he will have most occasion to use at first. It may
be said that the list contains merely what all
grammars exhibit; but this method prohibits the
use of grammars and all other English books at
the outset.” [pp.162-163]
