And look - MIT already has a gated instance. Anyone who's on mastodon.mit.edu is verified to have an MIT email. Neat isn't it?

Cool #Science that explains how plants made the move from water to land 500 million years ago and were able to grow beyond just a few centimetres. The key is the evolution of xylem, the transport tissue in vascular plants that transports water and nutrients from the roots to the stem and leaves. To be able to grow without a high chance of blockages in their piping, plants had to rearrange their vascular tissue.

The best of #Twitter is its spontaneous, joyful creativity in reaction to the moment. Now, its ironic death is playing out like a New Orleans funeral, an ebullient brass band noodling away as people dance through the loss.

“Lockheed Martini” lol

Woah - German government has got its own Mastodon instance and most of the ministries and many agencies already have accounts.
Verification problem at least partially solved - just need to check the domain is right!
I've also seen newspapers like theatlantic.com set up instances themselves. Looks like verification will be worked out sooner or later.

Pretty cool news! While protein phosphorylation is well understood in proteins, where it is known to have important regulatory functions, this post-translational modification had never been found in RNA. This may open a new field of post translational modifications in RNA #science #biochemistry #RNA #archaea #microbiology nature.com/articles/d41586-022

Here's a lil thread of things I *wish* somebody had told me when I started advising #STEM #gradstudents as a lab head, #PhD program director, and grad school conflict-resolution officer. Or maybe they did and I wasn’t listening? 🧵

Now that #PlosBiology has joined 🦣, I thought I’d share the editorial that I wrote upon joining the journal in March 2020 where I discussed my vision for its future

Let me know what you think!
