That’s who you should be protecting.
If for no other reason than if you don’t, you will be next. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But you will be next.
(Or you will have to do things that will make you wish you’d been next.)

Defending somebody in need is an altruistic, even heroic, thing.
Defending somebody who can perfectly defend himself is paternalistic and diminish you both.
And if the defendant is stronger than you, that makes you a stooge, if not a complete fool.
