Decentralized social networks have crashed into the reality of government regulation. Mississippi has passed a law requiring age verification or face a $10K fine per user

- BlueSky is now blocking users from Mississippi because it can’t afford to build the feature

- Mastodon has said server admins are on their own to comply with the law.

It's weird.

The EU makes their laws requiring things from web owners according to their size, so personal websites are usually free of them, but the big ones are totally required to comply.

Mississippi lawmakers should have done the same.

Besides, a $10K fine risk is reason enough to close your site on Mississippi even if you are able to comply. The risk of doing something wrong by mistake and being fined is too much. They have made it too big.
